On her own in the Big Apple, Jenna Jay Scroggs can handle herself when trouble arises. But when she tries to rescue a horse, the passionate do-gooder ends up on a runaway Central Park carriage ride with a hunky stranger. With his sexy drawl and well-worn Levis, Beauregard Cates is doing his darnedest to make Jenna homesick for the small western town she’s spent years trying to forget. And it’s working: She’s dangerously close to falling head over boot heels for the rugged rodeo star with hair the color of moonshine.

Beau came to the big city to escape his past and live life to the fullest. Yet the leggy blonde with eyes as blue as a western sky causes a real hitch in his giddy-up. So when the well-meaning folks of Bramble plot to bring Jenna home, Beau will need to convince her that she won’t ever get Texas out of her blood – or one good-time, ever-lovin’ cowboy out of her heart.

This was my first read by Katie Lane, but it won’t be my last. I enjoyed her writing style a lot. It reminded me a lot of books by Kristin Higgans or Jill Shalvis…. a “down home” feel with some humor, a quirky supporting cast of characters and a hunky hero.

Jenna Jay Scroggs is a small-town girl living in New York City. She has tried for years to put her past in Bramble, Texas behind her, convinced that she has adjusted to life in the big city. A smart, sharp girl with a heart of gold, the values instilled in her from childhood can’t quite be ignored. She is a sucker for the long shot, the down-on-your-luck cases and the underdogs. She has taken it upon herself to help every lost (and not so lost) cause she comes across, regardless of the danger to herself. It is while trying to bring an injustice to light that she meets Beauregard Cates.

Beauregard Cates is a rodeo cowboy determined to live his life on his terms. His difficult past and uncertain future have left him roaming the country searching out nothing but a good time. Jenna is nothing like the sweet, curvy women he is normally drawn to, and she isn’t your normal damsel in distress. She has a chip on her shoulder the size of Texas, and refuses to fall for his good old boy charm. For some reason, though, her brazen demeanor and slim, athletic figure work for him in a big way, and he finds it hard to keep from seeking her out once their paths crossed. Despite her best efforts to resist, Beau has the ability to break through Jenna’s defenses in a heartbeat, although she puts them right back up just as quickly.

A combination of Jenna’s troubles and shared ties to Jenna’s hometown eventually brings them back to Bramble, and it doesn’t take long for the citizens there to put two and two together and begin to play matchmaker. Despite their differences it is obvious to everyone (except maybe Jenna and Beau) that opposites really do attract. Their chemistry was amazing. She was prickly and pushy and determined to cut off her nose despite her face. Beau insisted that she was not his type, that he was looking for nothing more than a good time, while secretly wishing for life with a family at home like his brothers had found.

Jenna Jay and Beau could both be two of the most dense people on the planet, which was frustrating at times. Jenna’s determination to stand by her man (the unemployed, tattooed rocker boyfriend her family disapproved of) despite their incompatibility and her obvious fascination with Beau made me want to yell at her to Just. Wake. Up! Beau had good reason to be wary when it came to women, but even his past wasn’t enough to make up for him pushing everyone in his life away at a time when he should be pulling everyone, including Jenna, close.

Watching these two falling for each other was a humorous and touching journey. I liked the people of Bramble and their willingness to stand by and support each other no matter what. The humor and heart that the author infused into the story made this a very enjoyable read. The romance was sweet with a touch of heat, and by the end I was really pulling for Jenna & Beau’s happy ever after.

  5. Oh boy, do I ever want to read Jenna and Beau’s story, Katie! The book blurb was a long one, which gave me a good taste of what’s to come in the rest of the story. I was raised on a ranch in SoCal, and many of my ancestors are from Farmersville and Dallas, Texas. Go cowboys! Western romance is my fave genre, be it contemporary or historical. Sigh.
