The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

Steele, a KGI team leader, is an enigma not even his team mates understand. His emotions are tightly locked down and nothing can break that icy exterior. Nothing except Maren Scofield, a doctor on a mission, a woman who has gotten under Steele’s skin and threatens to crack that unflappable cool he’s legendary for.

Steele is determined not to allow Maren past his carefully guarded defenses, but when she’s in danger, there’s no way he’ll allow anyone else to protect her. She’s hiding something. He’s sure of it. But he isn’t prepared for the shocking discovery her secrets reveal. Or how they will forever alter the course of his destiny. He has a decision to make. Hold tight and shut her out. Or take a chance on something more powerful than he’s ever faced. Love.

Maya Banks is my hero. I could sit here and tell you all the ways I love this book, this series….but what does it boil down to? That Maya Banks is my hero. Simply put that’s it in a nutshell. Her characters come to life with a vibrancy that enthralls me from beginning to end. If you’re a fan of the KGI series you’ll know that Steele’s book has been a long time coming. He’s always been present, always in the background protecting his team and by extension, the Kelly’s. Until the last book Steele hadn’t shown much emotion at all. He’s always been this big bad guy prowling the shadows but he did so with utter calm. When his team mate PJ was attacked he finally thawed a bit and allowed everyone to see how much he truly cared for them before retreating back behind his self imposed wall.

The one woman who he can’t ever seem to shut out of his head is Maren. Unbeknownst to her, the star of her nightly fantasies has some fantasies of his own and after an extraction gone wrong makes it his mission to finally get her out of his system. Except one night isn’t nearly enough and he finds himself going back for seconds and thirds and even then he can’t shake the woman from his mind.

Maren is content in her jungle lifestyle. Providing medical care to the people of the region fulfills her on a deep level and keeps her from feeling too lonely. Steele stirs all her emotions and she quickly finds herself embroiled so deep into him that she doesn’t want to come up for air. There are large sections of the book where it’s just convoseration and naughty times….but because of Steele’s normal quietness, I gobbled up his opening up to Maren and all the conversations they had.

Gah! Loved this book. Loved Steele. Love this series. Love Maya Banks. I’m probably biased because I have loved every book I’ve picked up from Ms Banks and have never given her less then 3 stars (and that was only on one occasion) but Forged In Steele continued her streak of excellence for me. Forged provided me with an escape from reality and an action packed ride with alpha gun toting men. Each and every Kelly as well as Steele’s teams make an appearance and play an integral role in protecting Maren from a shady man deep in the underworld of Mexico.

My favorite aspect of a romantic suspense is the slow awaking of emotions in the typical alpha male. His resistance to these changes and his subsequent admission of these feelings, not only to the heroine but to those other alpha men he calls friends. Since Steele had always been a man of few words, I really looked forward to him opening up and learning the back story that not even those closest to him seemed to know. Maren was the perfect heroine for him because she was self assured and his lack of words didn’t freak her out…much. I also loved how they had a past together but were only now coming to terms with their attraction to each other.

The only thing I found “off” was the direction Maren and Steele’s relationship takes…and how fast it goes there. I get tired of that troupe and thought the book would have fared just as well to leave that out completely or at least until further into the book. I won’t ruin it….so just read it. 🙂

Finally with book 8 set to come out in December, we get Van’s story! I am ridiculously excited that the self proclaimed champion of women and children will finally get his happily ever after. He’s been a big part of every book and though he seems to have a carefree go lucky attitude, I think that he’ll fall hard for his heroine and have her moving in with him as quickly as possible.

I give Forged In Steele by Maya Banks 5 stars!
