A little magic goes a long way… Alexandra Belle Boyette is closing in on the big 3-0 and her mama has made it her mission to marry her off. In the tiny parish of Bayou Miste, deep in the Louisiana swamps, finding suitable hubby material can be a challenge—and Alex would rather not rely on magical spells to do the trick. But there is a sexy new man in town who might fit the bill… Ed Marceaux is in Bayou Miste to safeguard a key witness to a Louisiana Mafia murder. He must keep an eye out for suspicious characters—but the place seems to be full of them! What could be stranger than a woman dressed in a sexy nightgown chasing a naked man down the street? The enchantingly gorgeous Alex Boyette certainly makes it worth his while to find out… Add a Voodoo spell gone wrong, and voila! madness—and love—ensues.
So, short of me thinking this was not very suspenseful for a book labeled as such…I really liked it! I think this is my first Elle James book and I will definitely be back for more in the future. I found Deja Voodoo to be well wrote, the characters likable and the story line interesting and quirky.
Ed has a job to do. Go undercover in the small parish of Bayou Mist and find out if anyone else has been snooping around the area where his federal witness has been stashed. Easily done until a woman in lingerie chasing after a naked man in the middle of the street catches his attention. The more he gets to know the family he’s staying with and the small town he’s inhabiting, the stranger things get.
This was a cute, often funny read that kept me compelled to continue. I mean well intentioned voodoo that turns a lovable golden retriever into a super cute man? What can go wrong with that scenario? 🙂 And the dog wasn’t even the main story line, even though he plays an integral part, especially in the end. Deja Voodoo is a mostly light-hearted read that I found to be well wrote and engaging.
Alex and Ed, though slow to warm up made a good couple, each feeding off the others personality. I wished there would have been more heat between them but the relationship evolved well enough that I liked them together. Alex is a fun loving woman, with a crazy family who she tries desperately to keep together. She feels this solely rests on her since her fathers passing several years prior. With what amounts to a litter of children instead of a mere “family”, she has her work cut out for her. She uses her family as an excuse to not live her own life, something she finds is hard to do once Ed enters the picture.
I also thought that Ed’s story line of being in the town undercover could have been more central. This is listed as suspense but up until the end I didn’t really feel any of that. Alex felt as if someone was watching her a few times, but other then that the suspense stayed to a bare minimum. I much prefer my suspense to be sprinkled throughout a book and not all at once like in this one.
Elle James has intrigued me enough to come back for more which I hope has Alex’s friend finding a man….who didn’t start out life as a dog….I love books that make me laugh, and Deja Voodoo did that often. You have to be in the frame of mind to enjoy the kooky aspects and need a laugh or this one won’t work for you.
I give Deja Voodoo by Elle James 3.50 stars!
