Kane ‘Viper’ Tepes is one of the oldest living descendants of Vlad III. Vampirism is in his blood. So is being the President of the Sons of Sangue. Those who break motorcycle club rules that protect their coven are dealt swift punishment. No exceptions. Until one pretty little detective has him compromising his beliefs, and endangering his position as head of the MC.

Vampirism had Cara Brahnam turning tail and leaving behind her life in Pleasant. Now, ten years later, she’s back as lead detective and wants to see the person responsible for draining the women of Lane County brought to justice, no matter what deal the gang of miscreants has struck with the sheriff. Or the fact that her number one suspect is the sole reason she fled in the first place.

Now someone has targeted Cara as the next victim and Kane must join in the hunt to find the ancient vampire that wants her dead.

Oh boy…a vampire motorcycle gang?! Why, yes please sign me up for all of that! When I ran across this one on NetGalley I was hitting request before I could fully form a thought. Because….vampire…..motorcycle gang… Once I read it though I was left slightly conflicted with the writing and story line.

Cara is our heroine. A cop who has come back to her hometown to escape a co-worker and to be closer to the only family she cares about, her grandfather. She’s good at her job but the small sleepy town has bodies turning up drained of all blood and it’s just not something she’s handled before. Everything points to the cryptic motorcycle gang in town and in particular, the president, Viper. Cara finds Viper incredibly sexy and very dangerous but she refuses to give into the cravings of her body when he is near.

Viper knows Cara saw him drinking from a woman years ago but something stopped him from going after her when she ran. Now she’s back in his life and he can’t seem to keep his hands to himself. Falling in love with Cara goes against every rule the motorcycle club has but with a killer setting his sites on her, he has no choice. He’ll turn his back on his brothers for the little blond police officer if it comes to it.

I liked Viper as a whole but at times I thought the writing was choppy and boring. There were large portions of the book that I wondered if we were ever going to get to the good stuff. The world building is slow and it kinda meanders throughout the book. I wanted more action. More insight into their world. It’s all very foggy and unclear. I didn’t feel like we learned enough about the other brothers. Usually by the end of the first book I will have a clear picture and a yearning for one brother to get his own book. Usually it’s the one the author holds out on until the end. For me, there is no front runner whose book I must have. They all blend together

Viper and Cara together was a slow romance. Cara fights it for so long. Almost too long. The sex was nice but not smoking hot. Once they finally cave to their feelings I felt they fit together much better.

I volleyed back and forth about what rating to give this one. I have hopes that the next book gets better as the author settles into the world. I finally decided a 3 star rating would suffice. I read the entire thing but it has a lot of room for improvement.

I give Viper by Patricia Rasey 2.75 stars!
