Charismatic bar owner Rowdy Yates isn’t the kind of man women say no to. So when he approaches waitress Avery Mullins, he fully expects to get her number. However, the elusive beauty has her reasons for keeping her distance-including a past that might come back to haunt them both.
Avery spends her nights working for tips…and trying to forget the secret Rowdy is determined to unearth. But when history threatens to repeat itself, Avery grows to rely on Rowdy’s protective presence. As the sparks between them ignite, she will be forced to choose between the security she’s finally found…and the passion she’s always wanted.
Lori Foster returns to her popular Love Undercover series with Getting Rowdy, a book that’s been in the making for quite a while. Rowdy, you might remember, is from book one in this series. He’s the extremely protective brother of Pepper who we met in Run The Risk. If you’ve followed my blog you’ll know that I disliked that book….except Rowdy. He stole every scene he was in and commanded such a presence that he took over that book. I was bummed when he didn’t get book two (but I enjoyed it nonetheless) and ecstatic when I learned he was getting book three…all Rowdy all the time!
Rowdy comes across as an overly womanizing, sarcastic, alpha of a man. What he hides is a hard childhood in which he had to grow up way to fast to provide for his sister. He never talks about it, until he meets Avery, the bartender at the seedy bar he’s trying to turn around. He wants her like he’s never wanted a woman before but she thwarts his every attempt to get close to her. It’s obvious she’d rather not get close to him but fights her mind and body every time they interact. Especially after he makes it clear that he won’t be avoiding other women while she makes up her mind.
I loved Rowdy! He was so in control of everything but his feelings for Avery of course. His fierce protectiveness of not only his sister, but Avery and children was so heart warming. I enjoyed seeing him interact with the young boy he saved from a similar fate that he had. The gentleness and compassion from a man that not many people ever truly get to know. Avery was the perfect other half to his whole. She was a strong woman who knew when she needed help and someone to lean on. Her ability to voice her own emotions even in the face of Rowdy’s inability was a breath of fresh air. When it seems her own past has finally caught up to her she runs straight to Rowdy. She comes to rely on this misunderstood man even before they finally come together. She tests every limit Rowdy has ever put on himself. Mainly the roots associated with the ties he now has. A sister, friends, a young boy, a respectable business and now a woman who is slowly crumbling all his walls.
While I wished there was more threat throughout the book instead of focusing mostly on the end, Foster did manage to give readers an action packed climax in the last chapters. I will be eagerly anticipating book four, Dash of Peril, coming in spring of 2014.
I give Getting Rowdy by Lori Foster 4.50 stars!
