Cassie Robichaud’s life is filled with regret and loneliness after the sudden death of her husband. She waits tables at the rundown Café Rose in New Orleans, and every night she heads home to her solitary one-bedroom apartment. But when she discovers a notebook left behind by a mysterious woman at the café, Cassie’s world is forever changed.
The notebook’s stunningly explicit confessions shock and fascinate Cassie, and eventually lead her to S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T, an underground society dedicated to helping women realize their wildest, most intimate sexual fantasies. Cassie soon immerses herself in an electrifying journey through a series of ten rapturous fantasies with gorgeous men who awaken and satisfy her like never before. As she is set free from her inhibitions, she discovers a new confidence that transforms her, giving her the courage to live passionately. Equal parts enticing, liberating and emotionally powerful, S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T is a world where fantasy becomes reality.
A Short Interview With L. Marie Adeline
What was your inspiration behind the S.E.C.R.E.T trilogy?
Well, I’ve always written about women’s lives, loves and relationships. Adding the erotic element was simply the next step. And I was inspired, not only by the success of Fifty Shades of Grey, but by the readership that came out in the open and declared their appetite for more erotica. When I grew up these were books we passed around under the table, but here were women reading Fifty Shades, openly, in every airport lounge around the world. And I loved that! I wanted to give them something a little different, something with a bit of variety, and a romance rooted in reality. The love story between Cassie and Will, a waitress and her boss, is the kind a lot of women can relate to. Plus, there are a variety of sexual fantasies explored in S.E.C.R.E.T., in case S&M isn’t the only “shade” readers are interested in.
What kind of research did this trilogy entail?
I can’t say enough about Nancy Friday’s groundbreaking book about women’s sexual fantasies, My Secret Garden. If you haven’t read it, you must. Now, the fantasies in the S.E.C.R.E.T. trilogy are a little more over the top and theatrical; it’s a novel after all. But I also canvassed my friends for their fantasies, which made for great conversations, the kinds that I hear women are having around the world after reading S.E.C.R.E.T.
Has the road to publication been a long process or did you find it easier than expected?
I was already working with my editor, Nita Pronovost, on another book, so she was primed to hear my pitch. Without her support and enthusiasm for S.E.C.R.E.T., none of this would be possible. So she smoothed out that road for me, and all I had to do was write my books. The hard part was “coming out” so to speak, as I’d written under a pseudonym, for no other reason than that’s what other erotica writers had done. I just didn’t have a plan for when my identity was revealed. And that’s taken a little bit to get used to; but it’s all good now. I’m having a lot of fun being an “erotica” writer, after years writing for TV and publishing literary novels.
Can we expect more books from you soon?
Yes, I’m crazily working away on S.E.C.R.E.T. Revealed, the final book in the trilogy. That should come out in the next six months or so. But I’m excited for this fall, when S.E.C.R.E.T. Shared is published. There’s “more better” sex, as I like to say, a new character named Dauphine Mason, and Cassie and Will have to overcome a few more obstacles before they get to their hard-earned happily ever after…
