Roller Coasters!

Eric and Trish from Bare Knuckle are super sexy and awesome. That’s sorta a given in Katie Porter novels (and all the romances we love to read!). But to finish up our “Vegas Top Guns” series, we needed to go out with a bang. What better thrill than roller coasters?

Or base-jumping. Either way.

The whole series has been set in Las Vegas, and each couple has had a different hotel to call “their own” as they fall in love. The roleplaying Paris Casino in Double Down, the classy Palazzo in Inside Bet, the classic Caesar’s Palace in Hold ’Em, and the slightly shady old skool Golden Nugget in Hard Way. But all of those places, although wonderful for the couples who wound up with very fond memories there, Eric and Trish needed someplace epic. A place worthy of two daredevils who share a serious craving for life’s most dangerous thrills.

That place would be the Stratosphere, the tallest building in Las Vegas.

Not only is it tall, it’s a mini theme park. Whoever came up with the idea of putting roller coasters at the top of that huge tower was either insane or inspired. See, Lorelie and I adore roller coasters. One caveat: I will ride anything, anytime, anywhere, and love every second. Lorelie loves the idea of coasters, and used to be the same way when she was younger. Now she has to pace herself lest she vomit. There’s a fine line between fun and being ill for the rest of the day. Damn inner ear!

That said, she can do straight down drops like nobody’s business. We learned this over the summer when we purchased season passes to Great America outside of Chicago. Take her up in the air, drop her from great heights—the inner ear says that’s fine, apparently! Then maybe one day—if I push her—she’d be able to do what Eric and Trish do, which is base jump off the Stratosphere.

It wasn’t enough to wrap a roller coaster around the top of the hotel and casino. No, they decided that strapping eager crazy people into harnesses and letting them jump hundreds of feet toward the ground below. The whole thing is a prelude to some seriously adrenaline-fueled sex, naturally, but symbolizes the jumps these two wounded, wary souls need to make in finding love with one another. They’re brave, but life has knocked them around. Funny thing about life, though: Eric, a plane crash survivor, is better able to jump off the Stratosphere than he’s able to say “I love you.”

Silly romance heroes. Luckily, Trish is there to give him just the push he needs.

Skin deep is never deep enough.

After a near-fatal plane crash, fighter pilot Captain Eric “Kisser” Donaghue is a changed man. By day he labors to regain his confidence in the cockpit. By night he moonlights as an off-Strip boxer, fighting for prize money to pay for his younger brother’s third stint in rehab.

In the ring, no one cares he once had a face that launched a thousand one-night stands-and neither does Eric. He’s only there to win. Yet he can’t take his eyes off the new ring girl, a glitz-meets-pageant-queen vision of blonde perfection.

Down on her luck but not quite out, Vegas showgirl Trish Monroe lives for the spotlight. The scarred, steely-eyed loner who stares at her from his corner of the ring gives Trish an extra reason to strut her stuff.

Curiosity and the temptation of a no-strings good time bring them together. The discovery of their secret fetishes-she likes to show off, he likes to watch-turns mere sexual chemistry into a fiery exploration of matched passions. They’re a natural fit. Trust in love, however, is harder to earn than trust in bed, especially when this beauty and beast hide even from themselves.

Thanks again to Ramblings from a Chaotic Mind for featuring Katie Porter and Bare Knuckle!

  1. I like roller coasters but I’m not a fan of the over the top big ones or if they go upside down or spiral.
The book sounds really good and I love that cover.

  2. Lori, Mary, yeah. I tend to stay away from the bigger coasters. There’s one called the American Eagle at Great America…It’s big, and wooden and *ugh*. I’ve only done it once this year.

Nikki, TBL, you two would like the Goliath, which is coming next year! It’s supposed to be the biggest, tallest, fastest wooden coaster.
