Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe-and won’t back down . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady’s companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She’s even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn’t without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace? This is the sixth in the Maiden Lane series; I have devoured each one and look forward every time they are out.

Duke of Midnight did not disappoint as I loved the tortured hero and the continuation of the story of the Ghost of St. Giles.

Artemis Greaves has fallen on hard times; she is a ladies companion to her cousin, Penelope. Her father was estranged from his family so they lived modestly in the country. Things turned hellish when her brother was accused of murder and her mother died soon after. Her brother Apollo is currently in Bedlam as he was found to be suffering from madness, but Artemis knows differently.

Maximus Batten, the Duke of Wakefield is courting Penelope and often finds himself around Artemis. The fact that he saved both their lives one night while he was the Ghost and Penelope was on an adventure in St. Giles is unknown to Artemis until one day she witnesses him with a sword and watches him move during a fight. She keeps this bit of information until she needs it, to save her brother.

When her brother is helped to freedom by the Ghost and recuperating, Artemis and Maximus become lovers. Maximus can’t stay away from her, yet he knows he could never marry her, he is on a mission to avenge his parent’s murder and the dukedom is important to him and he must not bring madness into the family.

I love this book, the whole series is wonderful and I would highly recommend reading, Duke of Midnight is one of my favorites. I so like Artemis, a woman who hates that what she is doing, and that this is her life, she wants so much more. I also love how passionate she is about her brother and will do anything to save him. I am really looking forward to Apollo’s story as I love those tortured men and no one is more tortured than Apollo. Maximus is a man bent on avenging his parent’s murder, it is the reason for everything he does and although he does not show much emotion, it rules his life and all his decisions are based on his revenge. The chemistry between Maximus and Artemis sizzles and the scenes of them together are hot which makes it so much more heartbreaking when Artemis realizes she must leave and Maximus is torn.

I enjoy seeing several characters from the previous books and like meeting the new ones that we are introduced to. Craven is Maximus’ valet and knows everything that goes on, I enjoy when he speaks to Maximus harshly about how he is treating Artemis. Although this is the sixth in the series, it can easily be read without first reading the others. There are characters that return and the story references scenes and situations that come from the previous books but it is easy to pick up and follow. The only problem I had with this book is that there seems to be some unfinished business and there are several things I did not get closure on, such as what happens with Penelope? I know the next book features her brother Apollo and Asa Makepeace, however I am not sure who the hero is but I am excited to find out. Duke of Midnight is a wonderful book and series and I recommend it for anyone that likes historical romances with intrigue and engaging characters.

I give Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt 4.5 stars!
