Jesse Ward drowned her with his intensity and blindsided her with his passion, but he kept her away from his dark secrets and broken soul. Leaving him was the only way Ava O’Shea could survive. She should have known that Jesse Ward is impossible to escape–and now he’s back in her life, determined to remind her of the sensual pleasures they had shared. Ava is equally determined to get at the truth beneath this man’s steely exterior. That means letting herself get close to the Lord of the Manor once more. And it’s exactly where Jesse wants her–within touching distance…

This series is like book crack. For real, the more I feel like I should quit it the more I want to climb inside it and mount Jesse like a show pony. God, sometimes I hate myself just a little bit but I could not put this book down. It’s an all consuming roller coaster ride of unbelievable, impossible situations where I wanted to scream in frustration and ecstasy at the same time.

Jesse Ward is the most obstinate hero I’ve ever read. The man has no boundaries he’s not willing to cross. The word “no” isn’t in his vocabulary and he will do ANYTHING in order to ensure he gets what he wants. He constantly tramples all over Ava and her life without a regard for anything. He can be mean, closed off and must be in control at all times. The control he wields though is an illusion. One he constructed in order to lie to himself. The person with the control has always been Ava. Will always be Ava. Jesse is a extremely scared individual whose iron fist is his coping mechanism for not wanting to be alone.

There is so many over the top situations in this book that it’s laughable. Anything that can happen does happen, all at once. All the while Jesse tries his best to seclude Ava and keep his deeply held secrets safe. Ava doesn’t understand his motivations and finds herself confused at every turn. Her body craves a man she thinks of as a stranger many times throughout the book. She defies him at every turn and then wonders why he reacts with such ferociousness. I applauded her attempts to get information out of him even if they were shortsighted and she ended up paying in erotically wrote sex later on. Their conversations had me giggling at every turn. Him yelling at her to “watch her fucking language” and her doing her best to use the most colorful language she knows. They’re so co-dependent it’s hilarious. I cheered with her as she literally kicked some ass and teared up with her when she was pain. The more I tried to distance myself from a book that I felt so immune to in book one, I actually got more consumed.

The This Man series is like taking the 50 Shades and Crossfire series and making an angsty baby. It’s filled to the brim with kinky sex and deep emotions that take forever to uncover but are no less real. I am looking forward to seeing where Malpas goes from here as I head into book three. There is no doubt in my mind I will read it now.

I give Beneath This Man by Jodi Ellen Malpas 4 stars!
