I’m so happy to present my author today! Welcome, Avery Flynn, I’m so glad you’re here! I’ve enjoyed several books by Avery in the past and when I asked to interview her she graciously accepted and let me grill her for a few minutes! Her new book High-Heeled Wonder is currently out and about in the world and I also got a chance to read it. My review will be up later today actually so be sure to come back and check out my thoughts!
On to the interview…..
What would you say has been the biggest hurdle since you became a published author?
Oh man, you get published and you think it’s going to be all bon bons and unicorns. The reality is …. it’s a hell of a lot of fun, but it’s a ton of work too. Then again, considering my work is making things up, that’s not a bad gig. 🙂
Is there anything you know now that you’d want to go back and tell yourself before you started writing?
Well, Avery Flynn is not my real name and if I had it to do over I would totally have picked my real first name as the first name for my penname. Seriously. It’s a little All About Eve somedays.
Do you ever write two books at the same time?
Thank God, no. I know some folks do, but that would make me nuts. That said, as of this moment I’m releasing one book (High-Heeled Wonder, Killer Style Book 1), finishing up edits for another (This Year’s Black, Killer Style Book 2) and writing the third book in a contemporary series about three sisters who inherit a broken down brewery. So … Yeah, it’s a little crazy. 🙂
Tell us about High-Heeled Wonder. Where did the inspiration come from?
I am addicted to fashion blogs and shoes so it seemed a natural fit to put the two of them together. Plus the fashion world is ripe for the romantic suspense pickings. I mean the egos, the outrageousness, the slightly unhinged fabulocity of it all. It’s perfect.
What is your favorite kind of hero and heroine?
I love to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. My heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.
Do you listen to music while you write or do you need silence?
Does screaming from the kids and howling from the dogs count as music? If so, I totally have that. 🙂
Who is on your reading pile right now?
I’m reading entries for RWA’s RITA contest right now so I can’t tell you the name of the books, but from the selection I received there are a ton of great erotic romances out on the market right now.
What does 2014 hold for Avery Flynn?
World domination? No? Damn. A girl has dreams you know. I’m giving some in person readings at the Lady Jane’s Salon in Silver Spring and the Lady Jane’s in New York (scary!), teaching a workshop at the Maine Romance Writers Retreat and RWA’s National Conference, plus I’m attending my first RT this year. I am amped for that. I would love any and all advice for what to do at RT from those of you who’ve gone.
What is your take on reviews? Do you read or ignore?
Oh yeah, I read the reviews. I was a newspaper reporter for years, so I’ve developed a really thick skin. I started out—and still am—a HUGE romance reader, so I have a soft spot for book bloggers and reviewers. Not everyone in the world wants to talk for hours about certain characters and books. It’s sad I know, but true. But bloggers and reviewers are always up for romance book gab and I LOVE that.
To date what has been the best fan interaction you’ve had?
I got to share a cab with Cherry Adair and I did not faint dead away. I’m happy to report she is hilarious and as much fun as you’d expect after reading her books.
Thanks so much for having me over, Nikki!
