She’s running from who she is……

All Jules Scott wants is to live a normal, quiet life—preferably one that doesn’t include ghosts. Jules’s talent for communicating with the dead has brought her nothing but trouble. Despite her best efforts, needy spirits always find her and draw her into their otherworldly drama. When one implicates her in a series of deadly crimes, she may need to entrust her secrets to the person least likely to believe her.

He’ll do whatever it takes to catch her. Detective Seth English can’t get distracted from the big case he’s working on, not even by his alluring new neighbor. He doesn’t believe that Jules had anything to do with the string of robberies-turned-murders that he’s investigating, but when she keeps showing up in all the wrong places, his gut tells him she knows more than she’s letting on. To solve his case, he’ll need to expose what the sexy redhead is hiding—no matter how.

Spirited is a great start to a new series, I am intrigued and excited to read about these sisters and their special crifts (cursed gifts). The story is interesting and fulfills many of my wants in a romantic suspense with paranormal aspects.

Juliana Scott talks to the dead, ghosts seem to stalk her, wanting her help to fulfill tasks that they are unable to complete. As much as she wants to avoid them, they seem to find her but she has her own problems and does not need others. Her mother died when she was young and Juliana and her sisters were separated, the three went to different families and she has been looking for Hannah and Shelley ever since, shaping her into the woman she is today.

Seth English is a Tidewater Police Officer who lives in the same building as Jules since she is staying with her adoptive parents Big Jim (Ernie) and April. The two meet accidentally but soon are entangled in solving a series of jewelry store robberies and a murder. Seth is investigating the robberies, hoping this will finally get him promoted and Jules is being stalked by a ghost who has answers about the cases. Aimee-Lynn is the murdered woman and the stalking ghost, she has a connection to Jules and wants her to help catch the murderer but has difficulty communicating her wishes. All the while things get complicated as Seth and Jules’ attraction grows but she is keeping her crift a secret which may destroy what they share, and it seems Seth’s partner Devon knows a thing or two about Jules, and what about this Prada purse that keeps coming into play?

This is a very enjoyable story full of intrigue, humor, danger and romance. I enjoyed getting to know Jules; she is funny and a bit quirky as she stumbles through life. I like how in the beginning she sees her crift as something unwanted but the author treats us to a touching story interwoven here that begins to change her feelings. Seth comes across as a tough police officer but has a sweet side as we meet his Greek family and spend some humorous scenes in the restaurant that his mother owns and where his daughter works. Seth and Jules’ relationship has a rocky start but the attraction is immediate yet there is so much going on that it takes a few scenes before they act, but then they can’t get enough of each other. The only issue I had (and others may be fine with it) is that I am not a fan of pet names and Seth calls Jules “precious” almost from the beginning and it became a little distracting.

The plot progression is fast and furious as the action starts from the beginning and does not let up with twists that keep you turning those pages. I always enjoy a book that the author has me guessing who the villain is until the end. Seth’s partner Devon is very likeable and I look forward to seeing more of him and hearing his story. Spirited is part of a series but has a definite ending with the romance of Seth and Jules however there is an overall story arc about her sisters and I am excited to read of Shelley and Devon’s adventure next.

I give Spirited by Mary Behre 4 stars!
