Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

This is one of my all time favorite series; I enjoy getting carried away to a world where Psy and Changeling’s rule. Their love is fierce and they will do anything to protect their mates from the dangers inherent to their world.

Silence is all the Psy have known for over a hundred years, now that Silence has fallen there is paranoia and death surrounding the PsyNet, an infection is growing that threatens everyone.

Vasic is an Arrow, a soldier and assassin that is devoid of emotion. Raised in an environment that breeds those that are more machine than human, he has been assigned to find and protect those with an E designation; they are the hope of the future.

Empath’s or those with E designations have been almost eliminated in the Psy world and those that are still around have had their abilities basically put to sleep, they need to be woken up as they are the key to the infection and those that choose to volunteer will live in the SnowDancer/DarkRiver territories with the Arrows to protect them.

Ivy lives with her parents Gwen and Carter in a northern area, it is a quiet life now but she has endured horrible treatments a younger Psy. She is considered an Empath and is surprised when an Arrow comes asking for her help. She is intrigued by Vasic from the beginning and as they work together in the Changeling area to solve the PsyNet’s problems her affection grows and Vasic begins to feel again. They have many things to get through as the danger ramps up when the infection grow, there is also the danger from those that are PurePsy that don’t want Silence to be broken.

Shield is Winter is an amazing book, the continuing series gets better with each book as the world is more intricate. I enjoyed Vasic’s story he is a strong but broken man but he is so sweet to Ivy and of course Rabbit. And I like Ivy, she feels deeply and is immediately attracted to Vasic and the two together are amazing, the chemistry is off the wall. I love when he can’t control his emotions with her and they travel to several places in the world accidentally.

This is book thirteen and the amass of secondary characters is large, we get to see many of the changelings from the Snow Dancer and Dark River complexes not to mention we get a large dose of Kaleb and Sahara, which is fun. There are many scenes with Aden, another Arrorw which I love and hope he gets a book soon because he is wonderful and I need more of him. I also like how Alice’s story is blossoming. There are so many character stories I am intrigued with and want to see them grow and find their own mates.

The pace is perfect and it picks up as the danger grows and gets closer. I love where I think the overall story arc is going and I will enjoy the ride. Ms. Singh writes an amazing world and I am loving every minute of it.

I give Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh 4.50 stars!

  1. Can’t wait to read it. And Aden’s book is next according to Nalini. It will be the last book in this story arc. but she still plans to write tangent books.
