When wounded ex-SEAL Zachary Norcross finally returns to rural Texas, his dark days are brightened by the beautiful and sensual Evaline Montgomery. Cautious but helplessly drawn to her, Zack soon discovers a dark secret which brings danger and suspicion to their quiet town. Sworn to keep Eva safe, and able to call only on his most trusted friends, Zack must face ruthless gangsters, crooked cops and his own darkest fears if he is to protect this stunning, precious woman.
I’m a sucker for a wounded hero and a damsel in distress storyline. A retired Navy SEAL injured in Afghanistan, Zachary Norcross returns to his hometown in Texas a hero, but bearing physical injuries from combat and carrying a boatload of survivor’s guilt. He is the epitome of a wounded hero. He’s intense, smart, strong, protective and caring. Unfortunately, while he was able to save Eva from her problems, he wasn’t enough to save this book for me.
The storyline seemed to jump all over the place. The sexiest scene in the book, involving online seduction research, didn’t seem to fit into the story at all. Even now that I’ve read the whole thing, I’m not entirely sure if that happened in the past or present, or what happened to Eva’s supposed writing career. I never really warmed up to Eva and had a hard time feeling sorry for her. She was shallow and crass and really, really stupid when it came to her deadbeat brother. I get that she had a hard time turning her back on the only family she had left, but she had no backbone when it came to him. She even jumped all over Zack for trying to protect her from her brother when danger was staring her right in the face. The secondary characters were beyond “aw shucks” cheesy. I understand that the author was trying to make a convincing setting of a rural small Texas town, but it never seemed genuine to me.
I rarely fail to finish a book, regardless of how disappointed I am in it. Since I received a copy of this book for an honest review, I purposely made myself read it in its entirety. Honestly I enjoyed the synopsis more than the book itself. It failed to live up to it’s potential.
I give Fierce Protector by Janine Kane 2 stars
