At a benefit dinner, community activist Maria Cervantes overhears two men plotting a terrorist attack that could rock Miami to its core. But before she can alert authorities, she’s almost killed in a massive explosion—and wakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened. As the sole survivor of the attack, she is now a person of interest to the NSA—and especially to Agent Cade O’Reilly. Because Maria is the one woman Cade has never been able to forget..
Years ago, they were closer than either was willing to admit—until Cade disappeared when Maria needed him most. Now he’s sticking by her, whether she likes it or not. Because the memories locked inside her mind could hold vital clues to the next attack. Because terrorists want her dead—and because he never wants to let her go again.
This is a fast pace thrill ride full of action, emotion and romance. The story is engaging as we watch Cade and Maria meet again after several years and face their past as well as current danger from a terrorist faction.
Cade O’Reilly, a former Marine was handpicked when Wesley Burkhart formed a special team for the NSA several years ago. Cade is usually an emotionless individual that performs his duties without question or deviation however when he finds out Maria has been in an explosion and they need answers, he volunteers to work the case which surprises his boss. He served with Maria’s brother Riel but broke off all communication without explanation leaving her confused and hurt.
When Cade walks into her hospital room Maria is surprised, she was devastated when she lost contact with him just as their relationship was changing. When she realizes what she is up against, she welcomes Cade’s help, but it will take more to repair their relationship. With the continuing danger that surrounds them there is little time to do anything other than just survive long enough to find answers.
What a ride, this is a great addition to the Deadly Ops series and I am excited for more as this non-stop action story kept me turning the pages as fast as possible to see what happens in the end.
Cade is a true hero, racked with guilt when he broke off communication with Maria, he jumps at the chance to see her again. The author incorporates past emails and correspondence throughout the story to show their growing relationship, so it is easy to understand how angry she is when she sees him again after eight years. The romance between the two is slow in growing as they deal with the past and the current danger; it is only when they are alone one night that the attraction surfaces and they share some hot and spicy scenes going forward. I like Maria’s character, she comes from wealth but feels the joy in giving back to the community and those that receive her help truly love her. It is heartbreaking to watch her deal with the losses from the explosion but she is strong and wants to help Cade find the culprits.
I really enjoy the camaraderie between the NSA men and women; this is one of my favorite tropes, a group of people working together in dangerous situations that have each other’s backs. Other secondary characters are interesting; Levi the mysterious rogue agent who feeds information but does not want to be part of the team, Maria’s best friend Leah is likable and strong, she adds much to the story as she gets thrown into the fray. I especially enjoyed seeing Jack add his expertise to the operation as it is always fun to see those from previous books come back. The author does a great job of bringing us up to date on previous characters so even though this is the second in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
There are twists and turns throughout the book, the main terrorist are known and it is refreshing to get their POV as we are privy to why they are doing this, but there are others in the mix that we learn about that are surprising. I have enjoyed Ms. Reus’ books in the past and this one is definitely a must read for those that enjoy her writing and want to read an exciting romantic suspense with action galore.
I give Bound to Danger by Katie Reus 4 stars!
