In a world divided by prejudice and hatred, only love can bridge the chasm.
Tensions are rising in the Gladium Province. The boundary between humans and Morgons has begun to blur. While the human aristocracy strives to maintain distance between their daughters and the dragon-hybrid race, fate has other plans.
As the daughter of the corporate king, Jessen Cade is duty-bound to honor her arranged marriage to a man she detests. Feeling trapped by family duty and a loveless future, she longs for more, straying to the Morgon side of the city.
Lucius Nightwing is the eldest son of the powerful Morgon clan, and the greatest enemy of Jessen’s father. When a bar-room brawl thrusts Jessen into his arms, his dragon roars to the surface, craving to sate his carnal hunger in the brown-eyed beauty. The beast in Lucius recognizes her as his own, even if the man refuses to admit the truth.
Juliette Cross, you have just blown my mind right out of the starting gate! I adored this debut book in ways I can’t even describe other than to say, WRITE MORE RIGHT NOW! Just kidding, I know you have a bunch of stuff on the way, so really I’m screaming at the publishing houses to get on with it and release some more awesomesauce, because girl, you got IT. That special something that just blows my mind. And it may have a little to do with the fact that I love all things gargoyle or dragon-esque, but more than that, the writing was phenomenal. Perfection. Orgasmic? Too far?
Soulfire is the first book in Cross’s Nightwing series. A book about classes, races and overcoming ingrained wrongs to find who you were truly meant to be. Jessan is the daughter of a highly powerful human. Raised on inaccurate tales of lore based in bias and prejudice, Jessan is a woman of privilege. Yet she lives in a gilded cage under her wealthy fathers thumb. Betrothed to a heinous man who wants nothing more than a trophy at his side to strengthen his own family name.
Lucian is the oldest son to the most badass clan of Morgan warriors around. Meeting Jessan was a chance occurrence, but a powerful one. He senses the human is his intended mate almost instantly, but being a human isn’t the sole problem. Her father and his clan are mortal enemies and both sides have a lot to lose if Lucian doesn’t play his cards right. Lucian tries his best to deny the budding attraction until Jessan is put in a dangerous situation which he must intervene. Not that I didn’t love him before, but that particular scene stole the show and sealed this character forever in my “fuckilicious” file.
Romeo and Juliet instantly came to mind upon starting this book. Star crossed lovers from feuding families generally makes a good read but Cross goes above and beyond to pull her readers right into the story. Lucian and Jessan spark instantly and though there isn’t a whole lot of sex per say, it’s made up for in tension. As things heat up between the characters there isn’t a dull moment to be had. This definitely held my interest from start to finish and I am eagerly awaiting more. The only drawback? I wanted more time……..
I give Soulfire by Juliette Cross 5 stars!
