When it comes to caring for the furry residents of St. Helena, California, groomer and pet rescuer Shay Michaels can handle anything. Humans are another story, though especially Deputy Jonah Baudouin. He s the town s resident superhero: upright, uptight, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous, even when he s investigating complaints about Shay s beloved foster animals. And that spells danger for Shay, a free spirit who can t risk trusting the wrong person again.
Jonah and Shay have been circling each other ever since she came to town, and he s running out of reasons to “not” kiss her senseless. But this deputy is a straight shooter with his eye on the sheriff s badge. He can t afford to get involved with Shay, a chaos magnet with luscious curves who s liable to turn his career and his life upside down. He enforces laws. She breaks them repeatedly. Keeping her out of trouble is becoming a full-time job and it s one he hopes is never going to end.
This book was so refreshing! I had never read anything by Marina Adair before, but I can see a glom of her books in my future. I love the way she writes – very Jill Shalvis-esque. She delivered just the right amount of romance, humor and emotion, and while it leaned more toward sweet than steamy, it definitely worked.
Need You for Keeps takes place in St. Helena, California. Shay Michaels is the town’s animal rescuer extraordinaire, working as a pet groomer by day and a stray collector the rest of the time. She fosters the animals she rescues until she can find them their “forever family”. Having lost her parents at a young age and spending years in foster homes, Shay is very familiar with the feeling of never belonging. She knows what it’s like to be a stray and wanting to find a permanent home, and she does whatever she has to in order to help the animals entrusted to her.
This is where Deputy Jonah Baudouin comes in. Trying to do the right thing for her animals often brings Shay to do the absolute wrong thing, and she has broken more than a few rules along the way. Jonah is a straight arrow. He walks the line, follows the rules and responsible is his middle name. What he can’t figure out is why he can’t get the beautiful, complicated, NON-rule follower named Shay off his mind.
Shay and Jonah have been circling each other ever since Shay came to town. Their attraction sizzles, but they both have their own issues holding them back. Shay doesn’t really know how to do permanent. Shuffled from home to home as a child, and being burned by someone she finally trusted as an adult have forced her to accept that her role in most people’s lives is temporary. She loves St. Helena, though. She has a home and a business and actual friends who care about her. And it seems that she has a sexy cop across the street who can’t seem to stay away.
Jonah has problems with his attraction to Shay. The way she lives life is messy, spontaneous, and definitely not on the straight and narrow, and Jonah is a guy who likes to keep things simple, safe… and legal! The minute Shay allows him to see past her saucy yet sweet exterior to the vulnerable woman inside, he’s a goner. All he can think about is how many times in her life she’s been let down and made to feel unwanted, and he wants to be one person who will not let her down.
I really loved Jonah and Shay. She was sweet and caring with just enough attitude to give Jonah sass. She was so scared of putting her heart on the line, even with someone as “safe” as him. She was good at helping animals find their homes, but the idea of finding her permanent home scared the daylights out of her. Jonah was a little uptight but so, so sexy. He teased and flirted like a champion, and when push came to shove, he wanted to do whatever he could to take care of Shay.
I feel like I could gush all day long about this book because it was such a pleasurable surprise. The dialogue between Jonah and Shay had me smiling and even laughing out loud. Sometimes animals in books can be as annoying as when an author puts kids in a romance, but Shay’s animals were so endearing – I wanted to give them a home! Shay was definitely a heroine you would root for, and Jonah was a hero in every sense of the word.
I give Need You for Keeps by Marina Adair 5 stars!
