Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.
In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines. But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.
This is another winner for Ms. Laurenston as she starts a new series that is as wild and entertaining as her others stories. I enjoy her kick ass heroines and sexy heroes as she weaves a tale of paranormal entertainment.
Kera Watson is a former marine who is trying to re-acclimate herself to life as a civilian again. She works at a coffee shop and for the most part enjoys it. When she tries to help a young woman in the back alley one day, her life changes forever. She wakes up with a start, in a strange house and immediately realizes she is stronger than humanly possible as she fights unknown assailants who attacked, while stark naked, and that is only the beginning.
Vig Rundstrom use to hang out at the coffee shop watching Kera work. He enjoyed her company and she was always nice to him. When he found her dying in the back alley he asks that she be saved and whether she likes it or not she is now part of group of women who are interesting, to say the least, called the Crow clan.
What a beginning, I have always enjoyed Ms. Laurenston’s books, she infuses her stories with humor, amazing world building and heroes and heroines that take on whatever is thrown their way. I have laughed at the snarky conversations and held my breath through many dangers in her books and The Unleashing is no exception.
Kera is one badass heroine, she is a former marine who has an attitude that rubs people the wrong way, everyone except Vig. All her Crow sisters have issues with her as she wants to use her Marine ways to change things, the clipboard gets a lot of attention. Erin is her mentor but almost kills her several times before they find some even ground in order to live together. It has been awhile since I have read a book with so much animosity between characters that are supposed to help each other. At first I had a hard time liking Erin, but she grew on me by the end.
Vig is a unusual hero, this strong, quiet man comes across different than he looks. Actually Kera thought there was something wrong with him when he came into the coffee shop, she believes he was a fellow soldier that might have been around one too many explosions in his life. Yet he has loved her since he first saw her and they have this connection that seems to surpass anything that gets in their way. I adore him, he is intelligent, sweet and treats both Kera and his sister Kat amazingly.
Since this is the first in a series, there is a lot of information packed into one book so it can be overwhelming at times but as the story progresses the plot comes together and the characters start to gel. There are mythical histories, dynamic figures that are powerful and danger at every turn. The story starts with a bang and does not let up until the last page as the author brings humor, danger and some sizzling sex scenes between the hero and heroine together for an entertaining ride to the end.
I give The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston 4 stars!
