No matter where she goes, he knows her every move… Long ago; Rachel Carpenter was a glamorous soap star. She gave it all up to move to Napa Valley with her daughters to open up a bookstore near her family vineyard. Her life is safe and dependable, until she encounters Kane Lafferty at a wilderness camp in the rugged High Sierra. A burned-out police detective struggling with his own demons, Kane is instantly attracted to Rachel. And like Rachel, he isn’t sure if he’s ready to open up his heart. But everything is about to change…

Someone is watching from the darkness. A fanatic obsessed with Rachel for years has decided to claim what he believes is his. It will be up to Kane to not only protect his new love and her family, but to uncover the identity of the stalker before it’s too late for all of them…

This is a romantic thriller that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. I enjoyed this new series from a new to me author and look forward to more.

Rachel is a single mom raising three girls, a former soap opera actress who was also married to a football star. She currently lives near her family, owns a bookstore and is getting her life back on track after several missteps.

Kane is a homicide detective, taking some time off after a traumatic experience at work. His partner was killed along with another young man and he is having a hard time dealing with it. He plans to head to the mountains to regroup at his brother Jed’s retreat camp.

Rachel has her hands full with her three daughters, especially her oldest Lark who is pushing all her buttons lately with a tattoo, dyed hair and an attitude to match. After meeting and talking to Kane, she decides that the retreat camp is just what she needs and books a week-long trip. Kane is happy to see her and they make plans to spend time together. She enjoys the stay but believes she is being watched and on their way home while visiting her in-laws her fears are realized when she is attacked. This brings out the protective instincts in Kane as he tries to help, but the danger is not over yet.

Every Move She Makes is an enjoyable suspense with several twists that kept me turning the pages until the end.

Rachel is a very likable woman, a single mom who struggles to raise three girls after the divorce and death of her ex-husband. The girls take everything out of her, especially Lark who is pushing all the wrong buttons. I like that she has a strong supporting family and enjoy how they interact throughout the book. When she meets Kane, a good looking detective, she is intrigued and follows through when he mentions a week-long retreat, not only for herself but also for the girls.

Kane is suffering from a trauma; he was involved in a shooting that killed his partner and the suspect. When he meets Rachel he likes her immediately and is pleasantly surprised when she shows up at his brother’s mountain retreat and takes advantage by spending time with her. They hit is off very well, the chemistry is definitely there as they find time to be alone amid the chaos of camping. When she is threatened, his alpha protectiveness is apparent and I like how his growing feelings show.

The threats accelerate after they leave the mountains and Kane does not want to be away from Rachel. Along with the growing danger, Rachel’s daughter Lark is causing more problems, she resents Kane and acts out which leaves her in danger. The author did a great job with the kids; Lark is a very realistic teenager who resents anything new, including a new father figure when she has not gotten over the death of her own father, and although sympathetic, I did want to yell at her a few times when she continued to act out.

The pace is fast, the author keeps you guessing throughout the story as to who the culprit is until the end. Secondary characters all play important roles; Rachel’s daughters are cute and exhausting as kids usually are and Rachel’s family is very close and supportive, which helps. This is the first in the series and I recommend it for those that enjoy romance with a bit of suspense and danger.

I give Every Move She Makes by Jannine Gallant 4 stars!
