Darcy Stone is game for anything — except sexy Navy veteran and physical therapist A.J. Colten, the guy who’d rejected her when she’d needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. Unfortunately, Darcy can’t refuse. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers.
A.J. admits it — Darcy is irresistible. But he’s already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and he’s not making the same mistake twice—until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than they’d ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? What’s the real thing? And where does it go from here?
This is one of my favorite authors, she writes heartfelt romances that feature amazing heroes and heroines and Still the One is another of her books that did not disappoint.
Darcy Stone almost died in a car wreck eleven months ago. She current works for a physical therapy office part time and at the local veterinarian’s office while she continues her rehabilitation. She started rescuing service dogs for people who can’t afford them and believes she has found her calling. She used to write for travel magazines, always drifting from place to place but is thinking she is finally home to stay.
AJ Colton owns the Sunshine Wellness Center, he is not only her boss but also her physical therapist. When they are not yelling or arguing with each other, he is helping her heal, whether she wants to or not. When they spend a long weekend together all bets are off as they realize their relationship is changing.
This is another delightful romance from an author that I adore. A second chance at life story, set in the small town of Sunshine, where family and friends are the lifeblood of the area.
Darcy is adorable, in a spunky kind of way. I like her grit and determination even when she would give anything to run away, like she has most of her life. She used to roam the world writing stories but after a horrific car wreak; she has stayed close to her sister and brother. She is rethinking her life and I like that about her. The only thing she regrets is making a move on AJ only to have him turn her down and her humiliation is high.
AJ is super; I have liked him since we met him and enjoy how his alpha goodness lights up a room. He hates that he turned Darcy down several months ago but his feelings go so deep and he does not want a one-night stand, something she needed at the time. He wants her on his terms and is determined to find the balance she needs to get her to accept him.
The two together are like fireworks, they fight, snap and throw witty dialog at each other most of the time but when they kiss, it is electric. They have several concerns to get through before they can be together, mainly Darcy’s abandonment issues as she fights the feelings of picking up and leaving when she gets better.
The pace of the story works well and we are treated to several characters that have been featured in past books, which is fun. The story centers on the hero and heroine and their growing relationship, and it is a treat. This is the sixth book in the series but it can easily be read as a standalone as the author does a great job of keeping the reader informed and up to date. A wonderful story filled with heat and heart.
I give Still The One by Jill Shalvis 4.5 stars!
