Her needs are dark. His are dangerous.
Charlie MacNiall has been bringing his beautiful king shepherd to the vet clinic where Ranay Killian works for the better part of a year. She doesn’t realize he’s been slowly wooing her. She certainly has no idea that he picked her deliberately—that she is to become his. A broken heart and a desperate desire to be dominated make her the perfect victim.
His perfect victim.
Charlie fixes Ranay, testing her emotional limits while pushing her sexual boundaries past anything she’d imagined possible. Pain is their shared pleasure…until Charlie disappears and Ranay is all but destroyed.
The FBI says the man she loves is a serial killer. Ranay can’t deny there’s a darkness in Charlie, a monstrous hunger that drives him to the brink. She even believes he could kill. But Charlie’s hunger is what bonds them—it’s the foundation of their love. Would he actually kill her?
The supremely submissive Ranay has never been able to find a man who can fulfill all her sexual desires and deliver the pain she craves along with her release. Until she brings herself to look into the eyes of the man who has been coming to the veterinary office she works at with his king shepard for just over a year. One look into Charlie’s eyes and she knows he’s the man who can give her everything she craves.
The secrets Charlie keeps are plentiful but despite that Ranay finds herself drawn to his dominance and the pain he delivers. When threats from his past threaten what they have found in each other Charlie disappears, leaving Ranay to pick up the pieces and search for the one thing that has ever brought her peace, him.
One Cut Deeper is a complete mind fuck of epic proportions. I think my face was permanently etched in an awed expression for the majority of the book. I was not expecting that level of darkness in a hero even after reading the book blurb beforehand. Charlie is darkness personified. He has no qualms about killing someone who is a threat to what he believes in. He is violent and almost seemed to have split personalities at times. The easy going, dog loving man and the sadistic, dead-eyed lover were at opposite ends of the normal spectrum. He lives in the gray areas of society, doling out justice as he sees fit. He was an odd character to develop an attachment to.
Ranay came across as a total doormat in the beginning. It took me a while to understand her psyche but even then she went past the limits I was accustomed to reading about. She was all in. She had no problems being someones slave even if that meant losing herself in the process. I liked how Charlie built her up as an individual and contained her needs to the bedroom the majority of the time. He really wanted to make self she had her desires fulfilled while still being an independent woman. He knew he’d have to leave her at some point and so he spent a lot of time making sure she wouldn’t fall apart as she had in the past with former masters.
I’ll say straight out, blood play is NOT for me. It’s the one kink that has me mystified and unable to understand. I just don’t get it and I don’t think I ever will. I do understand the aspect of pain and those who need it in order to *cough cough* get off. But blood just squicks me out *shudder*. It made reading certain parts of this book uncomfortable to say the least. I do think it was well done though and the author should be commended for that. I enjoyed the progression of Charlie and Ranay as a couple as well. And the dog….from an animal lover standpoint Sheba was an amazing therapy dog. It made me love Charlie just a bit more for knowing exactly what Ranay needed in her life, even when she didn’t know herself.
I never really saw the story arc coming in regards to the serial killer aspect. I love a book that makes me think and this was definitely that book. Wickedly intense and darkly erotic, One Cut Deeper was an amazing read!
I give One Cut Deeper by Joely Sue Burkhart 4.75 stars!
