Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn’t mean she’s opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister’s case, she’s as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…
Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He’s willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there’s no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…
I have enjoyed many of Ms. James books in the past and was excited to see this come up to read. She writes intelligent women who are fun and entertaining who find men who match them perfectly.
Victoria Slade is a divorce lawyer who had the good fortune to snag a premium case when she was first starting out which created the successful practice she has today. She strives for perfection in everything she does which is why she is struggling with some panic attacks she can’t control. When her condo is broken into, she immediately starts to look for a new place to live and rents a loft for the summer.
Ford Dixon is an investigative journalist who lives next door to her newly rented loft. The first impression he makes to Victoria is less than stellar and she comments on the cavalcade of women that have passed through his loft when she meets him. Miscommunication continues to hamper their relationship until they agree to work together to help his sister.
As usual, Ms. James has written engaging characters that are fun and sexy, paired with an interesting and somewhat different story line that captured my interest from the beginning.
I adored Victoria; she is an extremely successful woman who can laugh at herself even when she is trying to show the world a perfect façade. I liked being in her head as she goes through life. I laughed throughout the book at her thoughts while she was interacting with Ford, her therapist and even her assistant at her office.
Ford is also adorable, he is a good person who takes care of his family and has great friends. I love how the two banter back and forth; it is hilarious as they try to figure each other out. She believes he is a thoughtless womanizer and lets him know and although he notices her right away her actions turn him off and he steers clear, that is until his sister needs help, then the attraction goes into overdrive and they find they not only enjoy each other’s company, but also the attraction is definitely real.
Secondary characters play huge roles in this story, Ford has his two buddies Charlie and Tucker and his best friend Brooke around for running commentary on his love life, and of course his sister Nicole is involved in the major plot of the story.
The pace works well; the romance builds slowly as it should from a poor first impression to attraction and lust. There is not a lot of drama and the outcome of the one entanglement is almost too good to be true. This can easily be read as a standalone, there are characters from her previous books that are featured but you do not need to know their back-story to enjoy this one. All in all a wonderfully entertaining contemporary romance.
I give Suddenly One Summer by Julie James 4 stars!
