Janie Kayrs has known Zane almost her whole life. He was her friend in the dream world. She trusted him. But that was before he kidnapped her, spiriting her away to an isolated cabin to learn what her dreams never told her. Like how dangerous he looks. How he got on the wrong side of the negotiating table. And how much sexier he is in real life…
Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he’s worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it. They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice…
I’ve been an avid reader of this series since I won an advanced copy of book one, Fated, four years ago. I have sang its praises ever since and Marked is no exception! This book spans 20 years across all the books. When we first met Janie she was a precocious little girl who longed for the daddy she’d seen only in her visions. Over the years she’s grown into a beautiful young woman and as Marked starts she’s just found out that one of the two boys who’d been visiting her dreams since she was a child, was on the side of the enemy in the war of the realms. She’d always known Kalin was the enemy but Zane had been a wildcard. Always protective of her when it came to Kalin or anyone else, but secretive when it came to his lineage.
It’s widely known that Janie has long been prophesied to bring about the end of the war yet no one is quite sure how, or how many lives will be lost in the process. With the knowledge of Zane’s enemy status, she feels betrayed and unwilling to engage Zane any more than she has to in order to secure peace. If that’s even possible.
Zane has to tread carefully if his plans to save his family and Janie are going to come to fruition. No one can suspect his true motives or alliances if it is to work. What he didn’t expect is the amount of heat he’d feel seeing the woman who was his first friend, in the flesh instead of her dream world. Their connection cannot be denied and that makes her an even bigger target, a target he is intent on claiming for his own.
Zanetti has woven such a tight story line with incredible world building, that readers (and myself) have no problems imagining anything. Marked is packed full of revelations, action and witty (often humorous) dialogue. Janie and Zane set the pages ablaze with a relationship that Janie has been hoping would be her destiny for years. Her power of seeing parts of the future has never shown her own life but she’s always hoped the boy who grew into the muscle clad man with the gentle touch and protective nature would end up being hers. Even when she thinks about sacrificing herself to the hands of Kalin in order to secure the peace of the world everyone she cares about lives in. She’s very aware that anyone could fall victim to the violence that surrounds them and because of that she pushed Zane until she got him to open up to her.
The family aspect has always been something I loved about this series. Each and every character played a part and Marked brought it all together. I enjoyed watching the interactions with all the past characters as the clock was ticking down. Janie’s relationship with each character was profound and yet relaxed, the love evident in everyone.
I also loved how Zanetti gave Kalin a soft spot in Janie. Sure, he was a sadistic madman, but I truly think he felt he could be better for Janie. He was a character I hoped would step up and do something good from the beginning. I loved the evolution of his character.
As the series/book wound down I was wasn’t left wanting because Zanetti gave me everything I wanted as a reader. Even a spin-off series so I don’t even to say goodbye to this engaging world completely!
Amazing book, amazing series, amazing author!
I give Marked by Rebecca Zanetti 4 stars!
