Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what. This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

This is one of my favorite series; I love the world building, characters and storyline that Ms. Singh creates. Shards of Hope continues the story, after Silence has fallen and the changes that are causing joy, heartache and rebellion among the three races of the world. Aden and Zaira’s story is one of hope and I enjoyed it immensely.

Zaira is a strong Arrow, a warrior of the Psy, she was emotionally and physically abused by her parents when she was a young child in training and at age seven she snapped and killed them.

When she gets angry she goes into a rage and is unable to stop. She believes she will never be anything but an emotionless Psy and does not want Aden to spend any time trying to change her.

Aden is also a strong Arrow; a leader who many believe was never all the way Silent, he cares for people and is happy that Silence has fallen. He has always had a soft spot for Zaira and tried to protect her when they were young. When the two wake up in a cell and realize they have been kidnapped and hurt, they must work together to escape before they die.

Amazing, is all I can say about this series. Each story takes us further into this world with characters that steal your heart. This book, which has a wonderful romance between two broken people, also propels the storyline forward as we watch the residents of Earth deal with the end of Silence in different ways.

Zaira is a powerful Arrow who believes her past prevents her from changing in the new world. She feels she is so broken that nothing will change her and fights Aden whenever he tells her she has it in her to change. Her parents were monsters and it is amazing that she can even function in the world, let alone start to care for others. The connection she has with little JoJo, a small Changeling child, is adorable and enjoyed their interaction and Zaira’s growth when she was around her. It is an emotional time for Zaira and the other Arrows and as Aden creates a new Arrow family and community, you can feel the tug between what they have known in the past and what can have in the future. The Psy children especially are amazing to watch, they are so precious as they play for the first time with the Changeling pups.

Aden is the perfect hero and I have liked him since we first met him. He is a born leader and is changing the dynamics of everything that is Arrow based. His feelings for Zaira are strong and many believe he has never been totally Silent. Even when he was younger, he was a caring person which is unheard of in an Arrow. He truly believes Zaira can change and guides her through each phase of her emotions. The growth of their relationship from teammates, friends to lovers is an amazing journey and I enjoyed watching the two.

This is a long book, and there is a lot of information that Ms. Singh brings out so the pace is slow but worked well with the storyline. I was absolutely thrilled with the amount of time spent with the Changelings packs around the world; we meet new ones and visited with beloved ones such as DarkRiver and SnowDancer .

The world of these three races is changing at a fast pace, there are those that are embracing the changes, those that will go along with it but are still unsure and those that oppose, such as the Consortium, with their growing membership. There is intrigue and mistrust with the fall of Silence and

I can’t wait to find out how good and evil fight it out. The backstory is huge and I am not sure if many could pick up this book and know what is going on, however I highly recommend reading this series from beginning to end.

I give Shards of Hope by Nalini Singh 4.25 stars!
