Maksim Kirov is a mobster who gets what he wants, both at his posh gentleman’s club in Hell’s Kitchen and in the bedroom. Sexy, dangerous, and obsessed with control, he’s risen through the ranks to become a highly respected leader in the tight-knit Tarasov crime syndicate. He rules with an iron fist…until he meets Sydney Martin.
The Australian-born Sydney is determined to refuse Maks’s advances, despite their electrifying chemistry. The owner of a neighboring nightclub, Sydney rules her own domain. But when a deal with a Mexican drug cartel goes terribly wrong, she has no choice but to turn to Maksim and the Tarasov organization for protection. Could giving in to their intense attraction be what saves both Maks and Sydney? Or will their all-consuming passion—and her shocking secret—destroy their lives?
Book three of Haviland’s Wanted Men series is here! I fell in love with this group of men who are bad in all the right ways two books ago and Maks was always a favorite of mine. Big, scary and eerily silent, Maks was always on the edge of the gray area these men immersed themselves in. After accidentally shooting his brother’s love at the end of book two, Maks disappeared in order to put himself back together. Never one to stay away long from his mentor he’d returned but he seemed gruffer, more on edge than before. Setting his sights on the proud owner of a competing nightclub soothes his nerves even though she wants nothing to do with him.
Sydney is in trouble, big trouble and having no where else to turn, she asks the one man who is wrong for her in all the right ways, for help. Now they have to pretend to be a couple to ward off a drug lord who is intent on making her pay for buying and then destroying his product instead of funneling it through her club as agreed upon. What starts as a way to protect one of their own quickly becomes embroiled in some very real feelings and Maks has to decide just how much he’s willing to put on the line for a woman who refuses to open up.
Maks was awesome, I loved him so much. His large, muscular build coupled with his enigmatic personality left this reader wanting more more more! He was protective and determined not to fall for the beautiful Aussie, Sydney. He was slightly stunted emotionally due to a very rough and unjust upbringing before he was found by his mafia mentor and so he had a hard time articulating his feelings, even right up until the end. But his near barbaric need to have Sydney was so freaking hot, that it just worked.
As a heroine, I never really felt the pull towards Sydney that I had previous heroines in this series and I never could put my finger on why that was exactly. I “liked” her but her stoic, desperate need to not reveal anything about herself or her fears kinda of turned me off. She came off as more bitchy than guarded at times and as a reader I just had a harder time connecting with her. I did enjoy her teenage son though and thought his presence really helped bring to light Maks budding emotional response to people other than his brothers.
In short, I adore this series and I loved Maks but this wasn’t my favorite due to my inability to connect to the heroine. Having said that, Haviland continues to impress me with her ability to pen a story that is able to block out the world and immerse the reader in an exceptional reading experience!
I give An Obsession with Vengeance by Nancy Haviland 3 stars!
