U.S. law enforcement agent Heather Lane can read minds. But not the future. The dream of battle and blood that recurs every night must be a fluke, some obscure terror from her own mind. What its significance might be, she can’t guess: an attack from seven psychotic vampires at once only separated from nightmare by an eighth very different immortal. A handsome, brave man fighting at her side, a man she misses when she wakes.

Then the dream comes true. Heather is flung into a war between predators and protectors of humanity, the man from her dreams beside her again. Except now that she’s awake, she isn’t sure she can trust Ethan, or the shadow organization he represents. The U.S. military doesn’t trust either of them. But against an onslaught of evil like the one that’s coming, it will take everything they have just to survive…

This series grabs you from the beginning; the dynamics of the characters, the romance and the action keep you coming back for more. This is Ethan’s story, an Immortal Guardian who has fought mostly in the background and I am happy to see him in the forefront of this battle.

Heather Lane has worked for government law enforcement for many years. She keeps her unique abilities hidden behind a façade of being able to read people’s faces and body language, but in reality she reads minds. She does not realize there are others like her until she meets a mysterious man during a dream that comes to life one morning, a dream she has been having for a year.

Ethan is an Immortal Guardian, one of the youngest of the group. He often sites that his gift is a bit boring, but he is loyal and can fight with the best of them. When he meets Heather he assumes it is just by coincidence as he is traveling through a wooded area when he finds vampires about to attack her, what he does not realize is that she has dreamed of him for over a year. There is an immediate attraction between the two and their growing relationship helps sustain them through the battles and danger yet to come, as they must fight Gershim who seems to be using Heather for gain, and there may be a betrayer amongst the group.

This book is non-stop action from beginning to end. It opens with Heather reliving her dream, only to have it become a reality a short time later and does not let up. I enjoyed the ride and will be looking for more of the Immortal Guardians that include alpha men and kick-ass women.

Heather is a perfect heroine and fits well into this world of immortals, vampires and gifted ones. I enjoyed how she hardly bats an eye when she is confronted with strange things she has never seen before. Maybe it is because she has lived her life with a gift she had to hide from others or maybe it is because of Ethan.

Ethan is a strong hero who often was in the background in previous books. He looks up to the elders in the group and often idolizes them for their gifts as he believes his gift is not special. He has a good relationship with his fellow Guardians and he is very likeable, however he does have a past with another heroine Lisette, and it is brought up several times in the beginning; however he proves he has moved on and it does not seem like a big issue, however it should be mentioned. The love story between Ethan and Heather is like a breath of fresh air, they are attracted to each other immediately and there are not many problems between them, but with so much going on it does seem like their romance is not the main part of the story.

This group is large and loyal, there is a brotherhood/sisterhood that binds these Immortal Guardians and their loves, and I enjoyed that the group is close. I like the camaraderie and humor that is often present when they are not facing dangerous situations. This is the sixth in the series and although there is a large back story and a creative world, the books have their own HEA’s and the author keeps the reader informed of important issues, so it can be read as a standalone. The ongoing story arc is moved along nicely yet there are many possibilities of where the author will take us next. Shadows Strike is a great paranormal romance full of danger and heart.

I give Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall 4 stars!
