Fifteen years ago, I ran away from Whisper Hollow, Washington, a small town on Crescent Lake in the Olympic Peninsula. But truth is, if you were born here, you can never really leave. I’m Kerris Fellwater, and when I returned, I inherited my grandmother’s house—and her gift. As a spirit shaman, it’s my responsibility to drive the dead back to their graves, because around Whisper Hollow, people—and secrets—don’t always stay buried.

When I was little, I was told my mother ran off. But now it looks like she was murdered. With the help of my mysterious neighbor Bryan, we begin to unravel the mystery of her disappearance, and in doing so, unearth a dark force seeking to bury Whisper Hollow. Now I must work with the dead, rather than against them, because our enemy will do whatever she can to destroy the town, and she means to start with me.

Autumn Thorns is an epic start to what is sure to be a killer series! Galenorn has delivered a book ripe with action, suspense and romance that I found myself engrossed in from the start.

Kerris has finally come home after the passing of her grandmother, to take her place among the city as their spirit shaman. Whisper Hollow is unlike other towns, they have ghosts who just don’t want to leave. The spirit shaman is in charge of making their transition easier and getting them to cross over, no matter how hesitant  or resistant they may be. The job should have been Kerris’ mothers but she disappeared years ago and now it’s starting to look like she didn’t just leave, but was murdered. When Kerris inhabits her grandmothers house, secrets are revealed about not only her missing mother but about the entire town and the forces at work just below the surface.

I really enjoyed Kerris as a character. She was resilient and resourceful in times when she could have easily broken down and refused to go on. Her driven nature gave her the strength to carry on and find the answers she seeks. Adding Bryan to the mix was pure genius as he gave her a reason to keep going and allowed her a source of protection when needed. I liked how the book focused mainly on the town and the mysteries surrounding it instead of the budding romance between Kerris and Bryan. I loved them together but I enjoyed the action even more and though Galenorn did an excellent job combining the two flawlessly.

Hopefully there isn’t a long wait until we get more from this world because I’m really looking forward to jumping back into the mix with Kerris, Bryan and the various townspeople of Whisper Hollow!

I give Autumn Thorns by Yasmine Galenorn 4 stars!
