As the only female firefighter at Engine Co. 6, Alexandra Dempsey gets it from all sides: the male coworkers who think she can’t do the job, the wives and girlfriends who see her as a threat to their firefighter men, and her overprotective foster brothers who want to shelter their baby sister at all costs. So when she single-handedly saves the life of Eli Cooper, Chicago’s devastatingly handsome mayor, she assumes the respect she’s longed for will finally come her way. But it seems Mr. Mayor has other ideas…
Eli Cooper’s mayoral ratings are plummeting, his chances at reelection dead in the water. When a sexy, curvaceous firefighter gives him the kiss of life, she does more than bring him back to the land of the living—she also breathes vitality into his campaign. Riding the wave of their feel-good story might prop up Eli’s flagging political fortunes, but the sizzling attraction between them can go nowhere; he’s her boss, and there are rules that must be obeyed. But you know what they say about rules: they’re made to be broken…
Contemporary romance that has both cleverly written dialogue AND smart, sexy characters? Yes, sign me up! Kate Meader knocks everything out of the water with her newest book, Playing with Fire, that features a smart mouth, hot headed female firefighter and a diabolical Mayor who will stop at nothing to make her his own. It’s no wonder this author has been on the best seller lists before. Meader’s writing is smart, real and emotionally connects with the reader easily.
Alex is has had to prove herself. To her family, to the public and to the thron in her side also known as Chicago’s mayor, Eli Cooper. Being the only female firefighter in her unit makes proving herself that much more important. She wants to be known as an equal, not as a liability. She’s highly trained and having to prove herself again and again makes her very unpredictable when she’s upset. She liable to do something stupid, like cut an expensive car in half just to prove a point. Which is exactly what she did a few months ago and she’s still paying the price. This time it’s posing as the Mayor’s girlfriend to alleviate feud rumors and keep her from getting sued personally from the cars high profile owner.
As Mayor of Chicago Eli can pretty much have whatever he wants. What he wants is to win his re-election in a landslide and to do that he needs the help of one beautiful stubborn firefighter who can barely stand to be in the same room as him. Always one to rig the game in his favor Eli will stop at nothing to get her on his side…and in his bed.
Damn, Eli is one hot, suit wearing, pain in our heroine’s ass, Mayor. I mean, some of the stuff that came out of his mouth was shockingly erotic yet caring at the same time. I adored Eli and Alex together. His domineering ways matched up with her need to be strong yet sensual oh so well. He managed her outbursts while never holding her down and even when he was being duplicitous I had to love him.
I absolutely love this family of firefighters and the women (and two men) who bring them to the edge of sanity and reason. The core family unit looks out for one another and the love they have even though they aren’t blood related is admirable. The sense of family is strong and the conflicts that come their way feel very real.
Kate Meader is definitely an author you need to pick up and read. From her smart-mouthed females to her red hot heros, her writing isn’t to be missed!
I give Playing With Fire by Kate Meader 4.5 stars!
