He’s not the hero she’s looking for…
As part of the elite Centurion Corporation team, military-veteran-turned-mercenary Gabriel Diaz is a natural defender. He’ll do anything to ensure a mission is successful. Anything but get emotionally invested—he learned the hard way that can be deadly. Easy bodyguard jobs in between the more challenging missions are all he’s interested in now.
Maylin Cheng is desperate and running out of time. Her younger sister has gone missing but no one seems to take her concern seriously. Her last hope lies in asking an aloof bodyguard for help. He dismisses her outright, but all that changes when she is almost killed in a not-so-accidental hit-and-run right before his eyes.
As Maylin leans on Gabriel, she begins to rely on him for more than just her safety. But as their attraction grows, so does the danger surrounding them. When the elaborate web they’re trapped in unravels, Gabriel will do anything to protect them. Even if that means putting his heart in the crosshairs.
I do believe this is the first book I’ve read from Piper or her alter ego PJ Schnyder. I must say I found her writing engaging, heartfelt and fun and I am awaiting getting the chance to read her again! As PJ she focused mostly on steampunk but as Piper she gives readers a different side to her personality and delivers fast paced, heart pounding suspense with ease.
In Hidden Impact, we find Maylin desperately looking for her missing sister. She knows something went very wrong on her sisters cross continental trip but she’s unable to find anyone who will listen to her claims and help her. Maylin sets her sights on the Centurion Corporation, an elite group of mercenaries, and in turn their leader, Gabriel. Acquiring their help isn’t an easy task since they are supposed to be taking a break from the hard hitting assignments they normally run and Gabriel doesn’t even want to listen to Maylin’s plight.
Gabriel and his team are supposed to be resting and taking easy assignments so playing security at a party is about as relaxing as they get. The beautiful Asian woman currently pleading for his help stirs something inside him he long thought dead but she’s just going to have to find help elsewhere. Leading a mission to find a kidnapped scientist is just not in his wheelhouse. Until Maylin is threatened right in front of him and his protective instincts go into overdrive. Now the sexy catering business owner will be sticking to his side and he and his team will do anything to protect her and find her sister.
I enjoyed a lot of aspects about this book. I’m always a sucker for an elite team of mercenaries, military men/women, brothers, what have you. I love the camaraderie of a close knit team who trust each other with their lives. The constant banter back and force as they work together. The Centurion Corp gave me what I craved and added another level by also giving me two women on the team who could kick just about any mans ass. The heat factor and build up between Maylin and Gabriel was spot on and well developed. It simmered even as Gabriel was denying it. It took a while to get there but when they finally did, it was as explosively hot as it should have been. I also liked the different nationalities of the characters and how Ms Drake wove them so effortlessly together. It gave the book an unique flavor and gave readers an insight into the background of the Asian community especially. I walked away feeling like I understood more then when I went into it and that’s always a huge winner in any book.
The plot was well paced and the action hit at all the right times making Hidden Impact a page turner that I couldn’t put down. There were a few slow moments but they were few and far between and nothing for me to complain too much about. I’ll definitely be picking up this author again!
I give Hidden Impact by Piper Drake 3.75 stars!
