Overtime has never felt so good…
Marin Rush loves studying sex. Doing it? That’s another story. In the research lab, Marin’s lack of practical knowledge didn’t matter, but now that she’s landed a job at The Grove, a high-end, experimental sex therapy institute, she can’t ignore the fact that the person most in need of sexual healing may be her.
Dr. Donovan West, her new hotshot colleague, couldn’t agree more. Donovan knows that Marin’s clients are going to eat her alive unless she gets some hands-on experience. And if she fails at the job, he can say goodbye to a promotion, so he assigns her a list of R-rated tasks to prepare her for the wild clientele of The Grove’s X-wing.
But some of those tasks are built for two, and when he finds Marin searching for a candidate to help her check off her list, Donovan decides there’s only one man for the job—him. As long as they keep their erotic, off-the-clock activities strictly confidential and without strings, no one will get fired—or worse, get attached…
I’m not sure why I have waited so long to read Roni Loren but I’m kicking myself if Off The Clock is any indication of her awesomeness. I enjoyed this book immensely and will definitely be back to this series and may find myself reading her backlist as well.
What starts as a school break one night stand years prior comes back to haunt Marin when she meets her mentor at her new position in a sex therapy practice. One night years ago she gave her V card to the sexy teaching assistant in her college class while bent over a desk in the sleep study lab. Then she disappeared when a family tragedy rocked her world and she had to drop out of college to gather the pieces left of her family. Graduating and then accepting a position at a highly acclaimed and experimental practice is what has to be done to put her baby brother through his own college education. Never one to be a people person Marin knows she’ll need a good mentor to show her the ropes. She never expected that mentor to be Dr. West, the owner of her V card who can start get her heart racing with just a look.
Donovan is just as shocked as Marin to find out she’s his new mentee. He’s even more shocked at how naive she still is after all these years. Determined to train her well for her success and for him to finally get the promotion he desires, he decides a “hands on” approach may be whats in order. Embarking on an off the clock romance is strictly forbidden but the heat the two generate is too much to ignore.
Lord was this book sexy. The taboo relationship aspect is usually a winner with me to begin with but Donovan and Marin just worked so well together that I loved it even more. Each one had their own issues and came from a background less than ideal. Marin worried constantly about becoming her mother and about raising her brother on her own, leading her to often put herself last even as a teenager. Donovan’s need to find closure with the brutal death of his parents made him obsessive and in his eyes, unable to commit to a relationship any deeper than surface level. I loved how Marin was able to handle Donovan and see past the exterior persona he let everyone else see. She was able to connect with him on a deeper level which in part scared him and relieved him to be able to drop his guard with someone.
Marin really came into her own by the end of the book. Her growth of character was well paced and done excellently. No longer the shy, sexually reclusive woman she really attacks her job with determination and gusto. I was a bit upset with Donovan as the book neared the end but he did manage to redeem himself there in the last chapter or two.
Off The Clock is risque, classically erotic and emotionally charged. Definitely one for the keeper shelf!
I give Off The Clock by Roni Loren 4.50 stars!
