Powerful and dangerous highlander Dair Sinclair was once the favored son of his clan, The Sinclairs of Carraig Brigh. With Dair at the helm, Sinclair ships circled the globe bringing home incredible fortune. Until one deadly mission when Dair is captured, tortured and is unable to save his young cousin. He returns home breaking under the weight of his guilt and becomes known as the Madman of Carraig Brigh.

When a pagan healer predicts that only a virgin bride can heal his son’s body and mind, Dair’s father sets off to find the perfect wife for his son. At the castle of the fearsome McLeods, he meets lovely and kind Fia MacLeod. Although Dair does his best to frighten Fia, she sees the man underneath the damage and uses her charm and special gifts to heal his mind and heart. Will Dair let Fia love him or is he cursed with madness forever?

One of my favorite fairy tales is Beauty and the Beast, I love how the beast is tamed and falls in love when he feels no one can love him, this book is a take on that tale and I enjoyed how the author created an interesting adventure with romance and danger.

Dair Sinclair came back from the sea a broken man; he was captured and tortured along with his cousin, whom he could not save. He has nightmares, wounds that will not heal and many feel he is not fit to take over for his father one day. A prophecy from an old woman brings Fia to his clan, a virgin who can help him heal.

Fia has a way with animals and people so when Dair’s father asks her for help she is happy to go and brings her sister along to help. She has been sheltered for most of her life because of an injury

that has caused her to limp and created scars to her face but she is willing to try. When she gets to Carriag Brigh she encounters a surly man who is fraught with guilt and grief because he could not save his cousin, Jeannie. With her quiet ways and she brings harmony to the clan, but superstitions with whispers of witchcraft and the devil have people turning on Fia putting her in danger. When tragedy strikes and Dair finds himself as the new leader, the two must work to bring the clan back together as a family.

I enjoyed this story, a beast who not only feels guilty to be alive but who also does not believe in himself and doubts his ability to lead the clan and a flawed beauty that brings calmness to the people.

Fia is very likeable, she believes she will never marry but as part of a large family of daughters jumps at the chance to leave her home to help others. She does not know much about healing but believes she can learn and has no idea what she is getting herself into.

Dair is in a dark place, he barely functions on a daily basis with many believing he has gone mad. His father will do anything to bring him back so when he hears of the prophecy, he brings Fia and her sister to his home. Dair does not want anything to do with Fia but when she calms him during a nightmare he can’t stop thinking about her. His father pushes Fia’s sister toward Dair for marriage but Dair finds his eyes following only Fia.

I like the two together; they are both damaged emotionally and physically and begin to heal together and their growing romance is charming. However tragedy strikes around the same time witchcraft rumors surface and they fight against prejudice as they try to find out who is behind the betrayal. The pace was a little slow as the clan goes through several changes both good and bad and I had some issues with the fact that Dair was healthier than I thought he should be, his injuries seemed much worse when they were described earlier. Amongst the dark parts of the story are several light hearted ones, Fia owns a cat named Beelzebub who is as beastly as they come, but it had me laughing as the men in the clan try to gain his friendship. I liked several of the secondary characters that added to the storyline including Fia’s sister Meggie and wonder if we will see more of her in the future. This is an entertaining story and fans of historical romance featuring sexy flawed highlanders will enjoy this beauty and the beast tale.

I give Beauty and the Highland Beast by Lecia Cornwall 4 stars!
