In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…
No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself. Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior…or the worst of all the sinners?
I enjoyed this second book in the Bourbon Kings series immensely! Filled with emotion, mysteries and secrets, we are treated to a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. With family drama on the forefront, Ms. Ward keeps the romance between characters light.
We pickup up right where we left off from the first book, the family is dealing with the death of the patriarch, William and the fallout of his death keeps you turning the pages well into the night. While some secrets are uncovered, others are being revealed and it is hard to keep up with the misfortunes this family goes through. Are there really families like this?
Ms. Ward writes using many POV’s and it is interesting getting these different perspectives. Edward is featured more in this story but he still is an enigma and you are often left wondering what he is up to? We get to know more about him and realize all what he has gone through, not only when he was kidnapped but also dealing with his father while working for him, he really is a tortured soul.
I love Lane; he has really stepped up to lead this wayward ship. Somehow he believes he can fix the mess his father created with the help of his girlfriend Lizzie and school mate who is a financial wiz. It is amazing the things they uncover that their father did, his “can do no wrong” egotism hurt so many. Their sister, Gin is a glutton for punishment and I was repulsed by her and also felt sorry for her; however I enjoyed her revelation in the end and look forward to more, but I suspect a painful journey.
This is the second in the series and although the author gives some background, the first book really sets the stage with secrets, dysfunctional characters and wild stories and I highly recommend reading it first. I like that we met several new characters and I enjoyed seeing returning ones as the storylines get more complex, even a missing son shows his face to questions and suspicion. I enjoyed the witty banter between several characters and how they each have a stake in keeping the family together no matter how fractured it seems.
This is filled with a Soap opera essence that has me waiting anxiously for more. It has the pull of a train wreck, you hate what is coming next but you can’t look away because you might miss something. I loved the mystery that had me guessing until the end and there are still so many unanswered questions and several storylines that are incomplete but the stage is set and I can’t wait until I can read the next one.
I give The Angel’s Share by J R Ward 4.5 stars!
