The sheltered daughter of a country baron, Miss Adeline Pimm comes to London looking for adventure… and finds it in the form of a bloody, unconscious man slumped in the doorway of her family’s rented townhouse. Though his identity is a mystery, Adeline is inexplicably drawn to the handsome, injured man and vows to nurse him back to health.
Liam Cavanaugh, the scandalous Earl of Wolford, is startled when he awakens in an unfamiliar bed, wrapped in bandages that hinder his eyesight, with no memory of why he was beaten half to death. Although he can’t see the witty young woman who tends to his wounds, her alluring voice—and a single stolen kiss from her soft lips—helps soothe his pain. But when he is fully healed, Liam is not ready to let go of the one woman who stirs his deepest longings.
Liam will do whatever it takes to see Adeline again, even if it means giving up his rakish ways. But his disreputable past is not so easily forgotten and his secrets are far more dangerous than he—or Adeline—ever imagined.
Historical romances are what I broke my teeth on in the romance genre years ago. Books like This Earl is On Fire is the reason I keep reading them. Vivienne Lorret is a new to me author, and this book is the second in a series – I will be going back to read the first – but I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Adeline Pimm has lived a sheltered life in the country with her family. Born with a physical disability, she has never been able to conform to society’s strict standards of what a debutante should be. She knows nobody will seek her hand in marriage unless it’s out of pity, so she doesn’t expect to have a successful season. She comes to London with one hope – to broaden her horizons and have something of an adventure. Never did she think that adventure would begin with finding a beaten, unconscious man on their doorstep!
Liam Cavanaugh has no idea what happened to him. With no memory of his attack, all he knows is that he’s been taken in by strangers that he can’t even see because of the bandages covering his eyes. He’s not in the care of the Pimm family very long before he comes to appreciate their kindness – especially that of their daughter Adeline. He can’t see her, but her voice draws him to her and her touch soothes him.
The more Liam and Adeline get to know about one another, the more they are drawn to each other. Liam’s reputation as a scandalous ladies man is known far and wide. After being hurt as a young man, he vows never to marry for love, and not to marry at all until he has had plenty of years to sow his wild oats. He is a love them and leave them man, and he never regretted that until Adeline walked into his world. She’s the epitome of innocence,
and he’s the exact opposite. He knows he has no business even looking her way, let alone stealing kisses from the lady who has shown him compassion and offered her friendship.
Adeline knows she’s not the ideal candidate for an earl’s wife. She will always be the subject of ridicule or gossip, and her quiet country upbringing has not prepared her for London society. Cosseted and sheltered all her life by her parents, she refuses to enter into a marriage only to have her husband do the same thing. To her, Liam is all that is dashing and dangerous and adventure, wrapped into an enticing masculine package. She knows all of the reasons why she shouldn’t fall in love with him, but she can’t quite convince her heart to be logical.
There were so many obstacles keeping these two apart, and yet the author did a fantastic job of working through all of them. Sometimes the pacing of the story was a little slow…. I wanted something to HAPPEN! The romance between Liam and Adeline took it’s time, but it was sweet and emotional with a little sass thrown in. I would have liked a little more heat between them, but it worked.
I give This Earl is on Fire by Vivienne Lorret 4 stars!
