People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy’s girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father’s bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she’s made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father’s ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.
Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating–both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn’t the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don’t mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn’t the woman she’s perceived to be. She’s warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can’t have both.
Oh, Jodi Ellen Malpas, if I could kiss you I would. You’ve brought me out of a LONG reading slump with your newest book, The Protector. You had me turning the pages and not wanting to put it down. Right from the beginning I was hooked. Simply mesmerized with your engaging characters, the sexy interludes and the combustible heat.
Camille just wants to stay out of her father’s business dealings, stay clean and sober, and start her own fashion line with her best friend. But at her every turn her fathers high handedness threatens to unnerve her carefully controlled facade. No longer does she want to be the high supermodel on the cover of every rag mag. That’s the past, where she plans on having it stay. When her father assigns her a bodyguard in the face of a threat on her life, she’s determined to shake him. The last thing she needs is some stuffy shadow following her around everywhere.
Personal security allows Jack to stay under the radar, nonchalant and aloof. Never allowing anyone to see passed his exterior. He’s damn good at it too. With a stellar record he’s highly sought after. When an extremely wealthy man asks him to protect his daughter his first instinct is to say no. The last thing he needs is a spoiled rich girl to look after. He quickly finds out Camille is more than meets the eye. She calls to him on a level he’s long since thought buried and impenetrable. Protecting her as the threats start to mount is quickly becoming more personal to him and less about any money her father is trying to throw his way.
Jack is probably one of my favorite heroes to date now. Ex-military, grief stricken and feeling irrationally guilty for a role he played in the death of his fellow comrades, he battles back up until the very end. His PTSD was well wrote and completely believable. I felt for him and the war he raged internally. What combat does to soldiers is often pushed under the rug and anything that can bring light to that sensitive subject is always a win for this reader. His fierce protectiveness of Camille was something every romance reader yearns for. The connection was tangible and unbreakable.
I also really loved Camille as our heroine in this one. Her determination to live her own dreams and control her own future was very respectable given the fact that her father could have given her anything she wanted (with his own strings of course). Though she toyed with Jack in the beginning, once she realized the battles we fought, she became his biggest champion quickly. She was his safe place.
The Protector gave me everything I was looking for and more. Fans of Malpas won’t be disappointed and new readers will instantly be looking for more!
I give The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas 5 stars!
