Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.
Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.
She barged into my life and easily became my best friend.
All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat.
She’s the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.
Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I’m not so sure she’ll stay for the ride.
Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I’ll prove we’re worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.
**This is book 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series–a friends to lovers romance. You must read book 1, Checkmate: This is Reckless first. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.**
The huge cliffhanger at the end of This Is Reckless had me going crazy!! I couldn’t believe Drew and Courtney’s story ended on that note and was seriously counting down the days to This Is Effortless!
Courtney and Drew are friends and roommates. Courtney is hilarious and one of those people everyone wants to be friends with. How she can live with Drew, the sexy cop AND her best friend, without wanting to jump his bones, I’ll never know.
Throw in the bitch of a girlfriend, Mia, and you feel nothing but sorry for poor Drew. If he would only see what is right in front of him…
By the time, we get to This Is Effortless, Drew and Courtney have admitted their feelings for one another, have had some awful things happen while trying to nurture a new relationship and are taking a much-needed break to Las Vegas. Well, the ex Mia came to play with Drew and she had a little help from a friend which set this up to be one hell of a story.
Unfortunately, I feel it went downhill from there.
The upside of the book is that the story delves deep into the relationship between Drew and Courtney and how they will do anything they can to protect each other and how deeply the love each other. You get a good idea of how Courtney grew up with her family in Texas as her and Drew travel there on occasion. I enjoyed how Courtney is sassy with everyone in her life, especially Drew.
Now, I really, REALLY wanted to love this book like the first one. I expected this to be an epic story but it ended up being not exactly what I was looking for. So, in the midst of all the chaos with Mia, they rescued a dog. Now, all of the sudden, it seemed like half of the book was about the dog! I mean, great, they got a dog but I felt like chapter after chapter was about the dog. I wanted more family time, more on their friendships and definitely some drama with Mia.
Mia. I had high hopes for you girl, I really did. Now, don’t get me wrong, there were some definite moments that were awesome, especially when they uncovered who was helping Mia, but overall I was not impressed. The story gave a tiny bit of background info on why Mia was acting the way she did but I really thought it would be drawn out into a good portion of the story. It was not. What totally floored me, and not in a good way, was how things ended with Mia. It even was written that it was “like something out of the movies” which it totally was. I just expected so much more from that scene.
I enjoyed This Is Reckless and even the beginning of This Is Effortless. Half way through the book, I was no longer enjoying it and really was uninterested in finishing it. I did finish it but really don’t feel a certain way about it. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. However, I am intrigued by Logan and Kayla, two supporting characters who will be getting their own book, Checkmate: This Is Dangerous, this summer.
I give Checkmate: This is Effortless – Drew & Courtney by Kennedy Fox 3 stars!
