Samantha Becker is a busy and talented trauma surgeon with no time for nonsense. Her sister may have a special Shifter Gene, but Sammie is fairly certain she doesn’t have it, and she’s happy with her life the way it is. She doesn’t need the complicated Shifter lifestyle, and she certainly doesn’t need Liam Keller: Alpha cougar, Mayor of Cougarville and undercover billionaire. She hates him, but Liam is unable to get the curvy surgeon out of his head.

But the Shifter world isn’t ready to let Sammie go. She’s being stalked by someone who’s desperate for Shifter hormones, and Liam takes it upon himself to protect Sammie from harm. Things begin heating up between Sammie and Liam, but will they have to succumb to their inner animals in order to save Sammie’s life?

By the end of book one, Buck Naked, readers knew who the stars of book two would be. After Mathis’ elk trampled Liam’s prehistoric sized cougar (rightfully so for endangering his mate Sadie), and left him beaten on the floor, Samantha had no choice but to help him. As a talented trauma surgeon she just couldn’t leave him regardless of the state of shock she was in due to just having found out about shifters herself.

Now that her twin is happily mated and pregnant and Samantha has Liam recuperating in the nearest hospital, she’s determined to get to her medical conference as scheduled in Sin City. Even with the possibility of carrying the shifter gene herself, with no possible rejuvenation signs showing up, she feels content to get on with her life.

Hearing Sammie say she’s heading to Vegas, a hyena nest, rouses the protective streak in Liam. He does, after all, owe her his life. Sammie doesn’t want protection though being the fiercely independent female that she is. Focused solely on her career, settling down and having babies scares the crap outta her and not showing any signs of rejuvenation means she has nothing to worry about right?

Liam doesn’t want a mate. He wants an heir. At least that’s what he keeps telling himself. Yet Sammie is awakening a part of himself he thought he’d locked away completely after being betrayed by the woman he loved years ago. Trailing Sammie is for her own good. Regardless of if she wants him there or not.

These two start out the book like oil and water. They just don’t mix well. After meeting Liam in book one I found him to be a pompous ass who just took what he wanted when he wanted it. Yet, in Cougar Bait, I found that I really grew to like him. Sure, he was a bit of a jerk, but as the book progressed I realized that most of his issues stemmed from the hurt he has suffered in the past. Sammie didn’t really help much seeing as how letting go and allowing a man to mean something to her came very difficult. She valued her control over her life and she thought letting go of that iron grip would change who she was. She resisted her feeling for much of the book as a result.

The story line in Cougar Bait was a bit darker then book one. The story arc of the series is focusing on a pharmaceutical company intent of forcing the latent female shifter genes to surface through force. Sammie has some trauma that I found was a bit glossed over but I was willing to look past it since her character is so strong anyway. When she did finally surrender to Liam it is short lived and the last quarter of the book is basically just her fighting her own instincts and her need for Liam. He fights himself too, and of course that leads to misunderstandings on both sides. I found there to be much more suspense in this one due to the progression of the series arc as well.

I can’t wait to see where this series is heading! Book three is already cued up in my kindle app and I’ll be diving in as quickly as possible. With a fox as the hero in that one, I’ll be curious to see how big based on the prehistoric size and nature of both Liam and Mathis.

I give Cougar Bait by Evangeline Anderson 4 stars!
