Interview with Stacey Kennedy

I recently had the opportunity to connect with  “new to me” author, Stacey Kennedy. She is a writer of paranormal romance series such as The Magical Sword, The Watchers and The Blue Bloods. She sent me The Willow for review…which I posted yesterday, so just scroll down after you read this to check that out 🙂

Hi Stacey!! Thanks for stopping by! Let’s jump right into the questions okay? Yes? YAY!

What made you start writing in the beginning?

I read A LOT! It was from reading that a story came to me. An idea you could say. I had tried writing a novel about five years ago but I never got anywhere with it. Once I was introduced to vampires and werewolves, ideas came quickly. So, one day I grabbed my laptop and started writing. And now it’s all history.

Tell us about your road to publication? How long did it take? Did you face any obstacles?

Originally I had started out seeking an agent. I had a handful of nibbles at The Willow, but no one offered representation. Now, I know that’s because my writing needed some serious polishing. The story was there, the idea was great, but my grammar…not so great. I tried a few epublishers and got rejected almost immediately, but then one publisher said the thing I’d been longing for, “we’d like to offer a contract on The Willow.” Seriously, I was pretty sure my heart stopped beating at that point. My editor took me under her wing and worked through the manuscript cleaning up all the flawed bits and pieces. I owe all my success to her. She’s been fabulous to work with and I’ve learned so much from her.

What are you working on now? What’s coming in the next year?

Presently, I’m working on the novel that starts off where The Magical Sword ends called, Tainted Blood – The Enchanted Sight Book One. It’s nearly wrapped up and I couldn’t be happier. It’s turned out to be a great piece.

After that I’m taking a break from all my current series to write a new one. It will be my longest novel to date. My hope is to try and snag an agent with it. It’s a fun urban fantasy romance that’s been nagging me for months. I’m really looking forward to starting it.

Have you had trouble writing certain characters?

Nope, no trouble with any of the characters. I enjoy writing their lives and living through them. My only little snag ever was when I wrote, The Silent Howl – The Blue Bloods Book Two. I hit a point where I had no idea where the story was going to go. Resolved as I was going to get nowhere with it, I put it away for a couple days and talked to a couple friends. Within days, the block was lifted and away I went.

How do you plan a novel? The worlds are extremely complex, how do you research?

I don’t plan, that’s the simple answer. I’m not a plotter. I’ve tried a couple times but it’s always pointless. I usually start with an idea of the opening scene, and from there, I just write. The next chapter usually shows itself while I’m halfway through the current one. Normally, when I hit the middle of the story is when the end appears to me. That’s when I begin to make notes of what has to happen from there to wrap up the novel.

I actually don’t do much research. Only when I need it. Google is my best friend and always has every answer I need to find. The current story I’m working on, Tainted Blood need more research than most, because it involves DNA, which I know nothing about. But that’s why Facebook is so great. People know lots and questions can get answered easily there. I depend a lot on the friends I’ve gained there to answer things I don’t know.

Will we see anyone from your Guardian series again?

Yes, everyone. In the Enchanted Sight series, all the characters are held within those stories. So, there are still lots more novels planned that will stay in this world. What can I say? I love it and am not ready to let them go. Plus, The Blue Bloods series will still hold minor roles for Nexi and Kyden. Briggs and Rynn are quite fond of their friends, and always need them once in a while.

Favorite movie and book?

Impossible answer. My favourite authors are Katie MacAllister, Jeaniene Frost, Keri Arthur, Charlaine Harris, and Mary Janice Davidson. Just to name a few. I love all their books for all different reasons. If I had to say who I admire most as an author it would be J.K. Rowling. Her creativeness and world-building astounds me. Every time I’ve read the Harry Potter books or watch the movies, I’m always floored with what she has created. Brilliant!

Some of my favourite movies are, Hope Floats, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Pride & Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility. And of course, the Harry Potter movies!

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The creative process. I love how the stories evolve and become something I didn’t expect. How I can have a plan for the story in my mind, and by the end of it, it becomes something totally different. As fun as it is for the reader, it’s equally as fun for the author writing it. All the twists and turns, surprise endings…it’s just a blast!

Have you ever met another author and been starstruck?

No, I haven’t met any authors in person yet. But I can say that a few times an author like, Jacqueline Frank, has posted a comment on my Facebook and I’m left giddy. Thinking, “oh…that author just talked to me.” LOL!!

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs? In 10?

I hope in five years that my stories have reached more readers. That they enjoy the worlds I’ve created and love the characters as much as I do. My goal is to be represented by an agent and have one of my series sold to a New York publisher.

In ten years, only time will tell where I’ll be…

Thanks so much for stopping by Stacey! I truly appreciate it! I just purchased books 2 and 3 of the Guardian series as well as book 1 of The Blue Blood series. I am so excited to read them!
