BEG FOR MERCY
Megan Flynn thought she was falling in love. Cole Williams wasn’t just handsome and passionate, he was one of the good guys. Or so she thought, until he arrested her brother – the only family she has left – for a murder she knows he couldn’t have possibly committed. Now, with her heart broken and her brother’s life hanging in the balance, Megan will risk everything to prove his innocence. Even if that means throwing herself into the path of a sadistic killer with a hauntingly familiar MO.
Seattle Detective Cole Williams had given up on making Megan see reason where her brother is concerned. But when she insinuates herself into the most shockingly brutal case Cole has ever worked, he can’t stand idly by. Plunged into a secret world where the city’s elite indulge their darkest desires, Cole will do whatever it takes to bring down a madman who has made Megan his most coveted prey.
Megan is on a quest to prove her brother, Sean’s innocence. She know he could not have possibly committed the murder everyone seems to think he did. Her brother simply isn’t capable no matter what the jury thought when they sentenced him to death. Megan goes out looking for her own clues against the wishes of her ex, Cole, the cop that arrested her brother in the first place. Then dumped her like a sack of hot potatoes.
Time is running out for Megan’s brother and with new murders being committed Megan is sure she can tie the crimes together if the cops would listen to her.
Cole regrets the way he treated Megan after the arrest of her brother. Now he has a chance to make amends with her once and for all. He may still believe her brother is guilty but the evidence is starting to say otherwise. When they come together fire may consume them and they will never see the evil lurking in the shadows of the night. Because he is coming, and Megan will have to Beg For Mercy.
This book had me all tied up. The beginning was great because Megan and Cole were already together. That was a much different start then most romantic suspense. Megan thinks her life is just about perfect. She has a good job asa child advocate, she loves her brother, and her smoking hot detective boyfriend is finally trying to get in her pants. Just short of scoring a home run he gets called away to deal with a murder. Megans life quickly crashes to the ground when she finds out her brother has been accused of the heinous crime.
The book then jumps about 3 yrs. Megan still believes her brother didn’t kill the girl but unfortunately no one else does. He has been tried and convicted and is sitting on death row. Cole dropped Megan thinking it would be better for everyone involved and didn’t realize the effect it had on her. When he gets called to the scene of a shockingly similar murder and finds Megan there with his witness, all the memories come flooding back.
Together Megan and Cole are hot hot hot! Cole was an awesome protector and he really put himself out there by going against the rules to help her. I mean, it was a bit late considering her brother was on death row, but I guess better late than never right? He was strong and gave Megan peace of mind to finally live again.
One thing I LOVED was the villain. Holy moly was the guy twisted! I mean, scary crazy, rocking back and forth twisted. He completely freaked me out and I thought Jami did an excellent job of writing him. His little bits throughout the book moved the plot along in several places I thought it dragged a bit. And there were several places I thought dragged, mostly having to do with Megan’s job and the convenient murder witness that Megan was working with. It was good for the story line but I thought it was to well placed, to “yeah okay” for me. The killing/torture scenes were very “in your face” and graphic.
Megan herself got on my nerves just a bit. I can’t really explain why. I guess I thought she should have tried harder with Cole in the beginning. I get that she was hurt because he was a complete jackass, but he obviously still had feelings for her from the beginning. It didn’t take much to convince him to help her 3 years later, so if she would have pushed him more in the beginning her brother might not have sat in prison for 3 years.
Beg For Mercy is dark, grueling and something you won’t soon forget. Jami Alden starts out her suspense trilogy with a bang. Next up is Sean’s (Megans brother) story and if Beg For Mercy is any indicator, it should be a thrill ride!
I give Beg For Mercy by Jami Alden 4 stars
