BLACKOUT: Stop Online Internet Piracy Act

Many of you may have heard the term SOPA used lately. If you haven’t I urge you to take a look at this 4 minute video that has been the best at explaining a very complex bill.

For small review blogs like mine this could have very damaging effects. Say I link to another website, if that website has even one questionably infringing link anywhere on it, I become liable and the gov’t can pull down my website. If even one person makes a compliant about a website, justified or not, they can pull the site. Think of all the large websites that would suddenly have to censor every single thing millions of people post because they are liable for their users. Google, Youtube, Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter…the list goes on and on.

Don’t get me wrong. Piracy in all forms is bad. From movies to books and it should be made harder to do. However this bill just isn’t it. It is to broad and even though the gov’t swears they won’t abuse their new rights….really….does anyone believe that for a second? We can’t start censoring free speech in the name of stopping piracy.

So my site will remain down until late Wednesday the 18th or Thursday morning the 19th. I am sorry for the inconvenience to my readers but there are times when I feel my voice, however small, needs to be heard. I urge everyone to take a minute and stand up for what you believe in.
