Have you ever heard of a Bludman? They’re rather like you and me—only more fabulous, immortal, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.)
Delilah S. Dawson’s darkly tempting debut drops her unsuspecting heroine into a strange faraway land for a romantic adventure that’s part paranormal, part steampunk . . . and completely irresistible.
When Tish Everett forces open the ruby locket she finds at an estate sale, she has no idea that a deliciously rakish Bludman has cast a spell just for her. She wakes up in a surreal world, where Criminy Stain, the dashing proprietor of a magical traveling circus, curiously awaits. At Criminy’s electric touch, Tish glimpses a tantalizing future, but she also foresees her ultimate doom. Before she can decide whether to risk her fate with the charming daredevil, the locket disappears, and with it, her only chance to return home. Tish and Criminy battle roaring sea monsters and thundering bludmares, vengeful ghosts and crooked Coppers in a treacherous race to recover the necklace from the evil Blud-hating Magistrate. But if they succeed, will Tish forsake her fanged suitor and return to her normal life, or will she take a chance on an unpredictable but dangerous destiny with the Bludman she’s coming to love?
Turning her life around after a bad breakup, Tish, has only been focusing on her career as a personal care nurse. Finding a locket in a deceased clients home and then stealing it is not her usual behavior but feeling driven by an unseen force all Tish knows is that she needs it and it is rightfully hers. When she awakens that night in Sang, naked and with a gorgeous man with fangs she thinks it’s one of the bets dreams she’s ever had.
Tish is about to learn this is no dreamland. Criminy Stain is as real as anyone and in this world there is a whole new set of rules to abide by. Blood hungry animals, a quirky circus act and evil Coppers around every turn. This world needs Tish just as much as Tish seems to need it.
Wow….just wow! I loved this book with some serious WHOA! It was so uniquely different while still incorporating some common lines in paranormal romance that I just couldn’t put it down!
Wicked As They Come is the story of the magically inclined ringmaster, Criminy Stain, and his quest to find the one person in all of time to be with him. That person is the average nurse, Tish, who spends her day taking care of the elderly until she stumbles upon a locket filled with blood that transports her when she dreams to a place that she insists isn’t real. A place that’s in the past but also in the future. A different reality. Filled with blood sucking bunnies, deer and men. The Bludmen are a type of vampire that had been rulers until they were hunted to near extinction and made to live in fear from an evil ruler and his Coppers (enforcers). A bit steampunk, a bit historical, but all engaging and awesome!
Tish goes from an average, scrub wearing nurse to a goth-like, circus fortune teller. In this world she is a glancer, someone who with just a touch of her hand to bare skin can see the future. Skin is a commodity in this world meant to not be seen. Pinkies, average humans, must keep covered up or the scent of their skin on the wind will attract every blood feeding thing for miles. The garb is very historical Victorian..all high necks and gloves. Her relationship with Criminy steadily grows from wonderment to undying love over the course of the book. The best aspect is that it’s based all on emotion and not on the physical. Don’t open this one expecting crazy steampunky circus sex. You’ll be disappointed. Criminy is part trickster, part alpha and all blood feeding man. His control with Tish is amazing because her blood sings to him on a level he’s never known. He is definitely not your typical, huge linebacker of a man hero. He is hard and soft molded into one seamlessly amazing man. He talks in riddles and rules with a stern look over his circus participants. Tish completes the side of him that no one ever sees. The gentle Criminy who just wanted someone who understood his inner workings.
The world building is spot on with all kinds of lush descriptions, interesting secondary characters and animals that might make you shudder. It’s a bleak world run on fear and ruled by a man with a hidden agenda. The Magistrate wants all the Bludmen gone. He bleeds them dry in a witch hunt type mentality under the disguise of fear. I felt like I got sucked in and lived in the world alongside of them. My poor overloaded brain even went as far as to put a face to Criminy in my mind in case a movie was ever made. I totally see this as a Tim Burton movie…dark and sinister with Johnny Depp playing the perfect Criminy. When I start picturing actors you know I’ve been overcome by a book. It doesn’t happen with even half the books I read. Can you tell I loved this book? Huh? HUH? CAN YOU?
I will say that, at times, for short periods, it did drag a bit. I thought the addition of the love triangle to be predictable and it makes me a bit sad when authors feel they have to go there to provide the necessary tension between characters. The main characters stand on their own. I don’t need the triangle. I can only hope that in the next couple of books this person’s real agenda is revealed.
I’m just bummed that the next book doesn’t come out till next year. 🙁 No fear though, Ms Dawson has a world inspired novella out this fall to help cushion the blow between books.
Wicked As They Come is an excellent read that will have you shaking your head at the awe-inspiring world created between the pages! Wonderfully written and beautifully detailed, this will rock your book loving world!
I give Wicked As They Come by Delilah S Dawson 4.50 stars!
