Series: Nashville Nights

Book: Relentless, Book Five

Author: Cheryl Douglas

Topic: Interview with ‘Relentless’ heroine, Nikki Spencer

Q: How has your life changed since becoming a country music superstar?

A: I don’t know that I’d call myself a superstar. I’m still learning the ropes, and I know I have a long way to go. Music has always been a huge part of my life. For as long as I can remember I’d spend all my free time writing music, playing the guitar and piano, and singing. I’m just so blessed to be able to do that in front of a crowd every night instead of my bedroom mirror.

Q: Your father, Luc Spencer, owns Titans Records. He’s responsible for some of the biggest names in country music. Do you credit him with your success?

A: My father expects more from me than any of his other clients, I think. I have to work twice as hard to get the same recognition. Not that I’m complaining, I think it’s helped make me stronger, so I’m grateful for that.

Q: Is there a new man in your life these days?

A: Honestly, I don’t have time to date. My career is my life. I have a few good friends who happen to be male and we go out for dinner when I have a bit of down time, but nothing serious.

Q: Did you ever think about other career options?

A: No, music’s the only thing I ever wanted to do. In hindsight, I probably should have because the chances of making it in this business are so slim, but I guess at fifteen, you still believe anything is possible.

Q: The chances must be better when your father owns a major record label though.

The label may decide who the want to sign, but it’s the music buying public who decide whether or not you’ll have a career in this business. If they don’t like your music, they won’t but it, and it doesn’t matter how much money your label spends marketing you. You have to be able to deliver the goods, no matter what.

Q: If you could press the rewind button on your life and do one thing differently, what would that be?

A: I regret that I didn’t develop a relationship with my father when I was younger. I had a lot of preconceived notions about the kind of man he was because things didn’t work out between him and my mother. Turns out I judged him too harshly. He’s a great dad, and I feel blessed to have him in my life.

Q: Think you’ll ever put your career on the back-burner to make time for marriage and kids?

A: I’d love to have a family someday, and I feel strongly that marriage and kids are in the cards for me, but I may have to wait ten years before I’m able to make that fantasy a reality.

Q: Would you ever consider marrying a singer?

A: I don’t know. It would certainly make it difficult to balance two demanding careers like that and still find time to make our relationship a priority. I’d never say never though. You never know who you might fall in love with, and I believe in following my heart.

Q: Can you describe your ideal man for us?

A: He’d have to be strong, just to deal with the craziness that is my life these days. He’d have to secure, hardworking and driven like I am, and I’d like for him to be a family man.

Q: Speaking of family, you’ve been quoted as saying that family comes first, even before your music. Care to elaborate on that?

Family is extremely important to me, and by that I mean, all of the people in my life I consider family, not just the people who share my DNA. I feel blessed to have a lot of people in my life who love and support me, including the team at Titan Records. I can’t imagine my life without them, and I know wouldn’t be able to get up and do what I do everyday.

About the Author

It took me thirty-seven years to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I’d found my calling. In fact, I worked as a nutritionist for twelve years before I finally admitted to myself that while I enjoyed my work, I couldn’t imagine doing it for the next thirty years.

My sub-conscious knew that I wanted to be a writer long before the conscious part of my mind decided to get with the program. While my sub-conscious was hard at work creating character profiles, plots and storylines, my conscious mind was telling me it was crazy to give up a successful business on the off-chance one of my manuscripts might rise to the top of someone’s never-ending slush pile. After years of listening to that negative voice, I was finally ready to stop making excuses, face the fear and follow my dream of becoming a full-time writer, no matter the outcome. I’m so thankful I did.

I love bringing my characters to life and I am so grateful to have readers who love those characters as much as I do.

When I take a break from writing it’s to spend time with my husband (a.k.a. my real life hero), my son, and my writing partner, Tia, a spirited Havanese who enjoys tapping her paw on my keyboard whenever I need a little comic relief.
