Everyone please welcome H.P Mallory this morning! I am extremely lucky to have her here today to talk about both her current books! H.P is an indie writer who not only provides us with awesomeness in her stories, but holds down a full-time job AND has a family to take care of! What? Wonder Woman? Yes, I think so too!
Welcome H.P! I am insanely excited to talk with you, so let’s get started!
What drew you to write in the genre’s of urban fantasy and paranormal romance?
As a kid, I used to love the Twilight Zone Marathons (still do) and I live for those shows about true haunting. I think I’ve seen every one! LOL I just love the creativity available to an author in these genres.
I totally love those True Haunting shows too! They always kinda creep me out though, not gonna lie. I love scary movies, shows and ghost hunting stuff. I’m riveted every time I flip through the channels.
Your books have all been in e-form to date…I heard a rumor they were also going to be printed at some point…any information on that?
Yes, they are actually in print format now on Amazon. I uploaded them maybe 2 weeks ago
Yep, I see they are there now. Hey everyone, here are some links to the print editions of :
You are an indie author since you self publish your own work…which I find great because it lets you connect with your fans more intimately. What are the advantages to self publishing vs regular publishing?
Well, I’ve never been traditionally published so I’m not sure about that front although I did start with the whole agent thing but that didn’t progress anywhere. What I can say is that when you publish yourself, you’re in charge of your own destiny which can be good and can be bad. I definitely love the fact that I’m writing my stories for me, not for some agent or publisher in NY. And I love the fact that I can come out with a book every 6 months rather than having to wait a year or more to get onto some publishers list.
I love the fact that we don’t have to wait as long to get new work from you this way!
Your back in the U.S now, but was your time spent overseas direct inspirations for your books? (Since I know they are based there)
Yes, hugely inspirational. I included lots of the places I visited in Fire Burn. Not so much with Warlock because that takes place in a made up world.
Living abroad would be such great inspiration! The sight, smells and sounds would definitely get the creative juices flowing!
You just had an AWESOME contest (that I am totally bummed I didn’t win) where you are writing two characters based on the online winners of that. How is that working out? Maybe you could write in a crazy blogger?? *hint hint* No? Well I had to try 🙂
Oh my gosh, it was the most fun thing ever. I got way more entrants than I ever imagined and ended up picking two winners. I’ve started writing both winners in and it makes the story so much more fun. I keep hoping they’ll like how I painted them and I can’t wait to hear what they think. I’ve decided I’m going to host this contest for every book I come out with from here on out, so you never know—a crazy blogger might find her place! LOL
Seriously, this has to be the coolest contest I have ever heard of! I will keep a lookout for that crazy blogger in some upcoming book *wink wink*
Your books have a lighthearted feel which is a nice break from all the heavy para-romance out there. Do you plan to continue with this or do you have plans to write something completely different down the road?
This is how I write and who I am. LOL. I had many agents tell me to take the humor out of my books, that they wouldn’t sell but in the end, I couldn’t do it because it killed my voice. I think in a snarky, sarcastic manner and so it was natural that it would come out in my writing. And I’m thrilled I didn’t stray away from that because the number one comment I get from my readers is that they loved the humor in the books. So, yes, you can expect a lighthearted, funny feel to all my books.
Well, their loss, I say! And really, who can really say what will and will not sell. The market changes every day and what people want changes with it. I am so glad you stayed true to yourself and struck out on your own!
You have two books out now and one out in Jan 2011…whats next for you?
Yep, currently I have Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and To Kill A Warlock available. Toil and Trouble will be released in January and then I’m going to start working on the follow-up book to Warlock.
What/Who is on your to be read pile? Mine is huge but I’m always on the lookout for more!
Lots. LOL. I’m trying to read lots of my indie counterparts and lately I just haven’t had much time to read anything since I’m so crazy busy trying to finish up my next book. Some names to look out for: Lori Brighton, Amanda Hocking, Zoe Winters, Stacey Wallace Benefiel
Don’t you wish there was more time during the day? I sure do *sigh* Speaking of hours in the day…you work full-time and have a family with young son…how do you fit everything in?
Boy, is it hard! LOL I wake up every morning at 5 am and write for 1.5 hours. Then my little guy wakes up and we get him ready for his nanny and me ready for work and off we go. Then I get another hour or so in once the little guy goes to bed at night. It’s tough but I make time!
And lastly, the question I ask everyone…Hollywood just knocked on your door…who is playing the main characters in the movie of your newest book?
This is such a hard one. I actually haven’t been able to find anyone who reminds me of Rand, my warlock. Sinjin I’m not super sure about either but maybe Ian Somerhalder who plays Damon on vampire diaries. Sinjin has that same sort of look. I don’t know—I just have an image of my characters in my head and they don’t really resemble anyone. Cop out, I know! LOL
No, not a cop out at all! But uh Ian Somerhalder…YUMMY…he may have to be a Hump Day Hottie on here soon….*sigh*….I love me a bad boy!
Hey, H.P. before you leave why don’t you tell all my readers a bit more about you?
“I am a huge fan of anything paranormal. My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. Uncovering new places and learning about different cultures is pretty incredible. I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to live abroad–what an amazing experience! As far as favorite authors, I’m a definite Jane Austen fan. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book and the BBC miniseries is my favorite movie. As far as urban fantasy books are concerned, I really love the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (I was into these books waaaay before the show, by the way) and I was really into the earlier Anita Blake series by Laurel K. Hamilton.”
