An original eNovella in the acclaimed Nikki Glass urban fantasy series, taking place between the events of the novels Deadly Descendant and Rogue Descendant. As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down—but this time, her latest case leads to unexpected revelations of lies and betrayal…

Nikki Glass is trying to avoid Anderson, the leader of the Liberi, a group of descendents from gods. She knows that he wants her to hunt his nemesis, Konstantin who used to be the “king” of the Olympians, a rival group of Liberi. Although as a descendent of Artemis, she is a great hunter, she does not believe in revenge killing, and that is exactly what Anderson wants her to do. So instead she is staying away from the mansion Anderson’s group of Liberi live in and is answering phone messages from her former business as a private investigator, she has decided she is going to take on a new client.

Heather Fellows needs her help in tracking down a man she knows very little about. She met a man named Doug at a bar and they hit it off and went back to her place. However he left early and she does not know anything else about him. Using her intuition and hunting skills Nikki eventually finds Doug and a whole lot of lies and decent along with it. As she delves into the case she learns that several people are not who they say they are and things escalate to dangerous territory in a hurry.

With the help of two of her Liberi comrades she must unscramble what are truths and what are lies as she tries to save several lives and find the guilty person in this mess.

This short story comes between books two and three and really showcases Nikki’s talent as a super-natural hunter. She has always been good at her profession however when she became a Liberi, a short while ago, her skills soared but she has a hard time controlling them. I have always enjoyed Ms. Black’s writing as she weaves her stories, the pacing is well done and her writing flows whether it is a short story or long. The only problem I had was that it read more like a mystery instead of an urban fantasy; however it is still an enjoyable read and moves the series along to the next book.

I like the characters of this series, Nikki is a good person with strong morals but she also has many flaws and I enjoy watching her interact with the others in the mansion where the Liberi live. In this short story we get to watch Leo who is a computer genius and Jack, the trickster who is a descendent of Loki, and who may be annoying to Nikki but I enjoy his antics.

This is a great in-between story that definitely leads into next book in which Anderson finally catches up to Nikki and orders her to hunt Konstantin, I can’t wait as this is a great series.

I give Pros and Cons by Jenna Black 4.0 stars!
