When a simple mission to deliver the beautiful and brilliant Vanessa Crosby to a safe house goes horribly wrong, ICE agent Diego Santero’s life gets complicated. Keeping the anti-crime analyst safe from the notorious mercenaries after her program will put everything he’s worked for at risk.
Relentlessly hunted and not knowing whom to trust, Diego takes Vanessa on the run, deep into the heart of the deadly Panamanian rainforest. Vanessa reminds herself that she’s just another asset to the ruggedly handsome black ops agent…until their intense situation leads to a release of passion neither expected. But even if they make it out alive, how can they ever have a future together?
My biggest gripe in any black ops romantic suspense is when an author doesn’t give me enough romance to go with the suspense. Focusing more on the black ops angle then cultivating the romantic story I crave. Being my first Melissa Cutler novel I was leery that she wouldn’t be able to keep me interested in both sides of the story. Luckily…I was wrong. Melissa Cutler excelled at involving the reader in both aspects and neither one felt overdone. The perfect mix of both black ops and romance left me wanting more when this one was done and saddened to realize that I won’t get another one until next year.
Diego is insulted to learn Uncle Sam wants to use his elite black ops unit as a glorified chauffeur for one ex-American woman and her banking program that could bring the international cartels to their knees. After a kidnapping attempt on his watch, he drags Vanessa into the surrounding rain forest in order to protect her. Cut off from his team and not knowing who to trust they make their way alone.
Vanessa knows she’s just a job to Diego. Just like everyone else, when the job is done he’ll leave her and move on. Even constantly telling herself that she can’t help but crack a little at his bravery and attention to detail. With the stakes high they both will learn that the biggest thing they have to overcome is themselves.
This one was very enjoyable! There is a crazy amount of action that never seemed to let up and that really drew me in. Yeah, some of it was far fetched but that’s what made it fun. One crazy action scene to a smoldering attraction scene and right back to the action again. Diego, hell bent on taking out terrorists to avenge his brother, has never failed when put to the test. He’s adamant with Vanessa that he won’t be starting now. Unfortunately to Vanessa it makes her sound like just another mission, a job and nothing more. For a woman who is used to being last on everyones list this was probably the worst thing he could have done. Her self worth is pretty low and she spends a great deal of the novel not thinking very much of herself. I mean the woman left the US to follow the only friend she had to another country just so she wouldn’t be alone.
The story progresses nicely with no dull moments as readers learn all about the dangerous mercenaries on Vanessa and Deigo’s tails. The attraction between them heats up at a wonderful pace. I especially enjoyed Diego and his slow awakening to the idea that revenge isn’t something to live for. You need to live for the present, not the past and Vanessa opened his eyes to the fact that his brother wouldn’t want him to be living like he’d been living.
This is a fairly short read, one that feels complete regardless of that fact. I can fully recommend this one and I will definitely be back for more!
I give Tempted Into Danger by Melissa Cutler 4 stars!
