A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred. A woman whose very existence has been erased. A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself. A deadly price that must be paid. The day of reckoning is here.
Where to begin, this is the twelfth book in the Psy/Changeling series and I believe this is one of the best. This book has been years in the making, we were introduced to the Ghost several books ago and ever since we have wanted to know who he is and what his plans are. This book is different than the others; it feels darker and more dangerous. We find out many answers to questions that we have been waiting for, who is true evil, who is the Ghost and what is the immediate future of the PsyNet as we have seen the disintegration from within.
The hero and heroine of this book have been a guarded secrets and by the time this review is posted many may know who they are but I will keep it spoiler free.
The hero has been searching for the heroine for seven years and when he finally finds her he is unsure if she is too broken and beyond his help. She tells him that she developed a labyrinth in her mind to help her through the years of torture and suffering. When she is free and is feeling safe with him, she is finally able to unravel the labyrinth and regains her abilities yet her memories are still faint.
As she slowly comes back to the living again she starts to remember the past and what they shared, she believes they are meant to be together, however they both know that their race must face its most challenging problems. The Psy are involved in a civil war that will destroy them as Pure Psy want only Silence whereas others believe that Silence is broken and they must rebuild in order to survive.
The Psy race must choose a path, Silence or not, who will go which way, will the Psy follow what they have know for the past hundred years, or will they adapt and survive.
I thoroughly enjoy this book, the romance was off the chart and apparently caused several earthquakes as well as damaging their home, it was amazing that the love they felt for each other was so intense. The way Ms. Singh shows their feelings is amazing, as strong as the mate bond of changelings yet they are Psy and were not supposed to have these feelings. I also loved how we were able to visit those we have met before, the leopards from Dark River and of course one of my favorites, Judd spends a lot of time on the pages.
The evil ones are pure evil, the damage done to the hero and heroine in the name of Silence and power is heartbreaking, especially when you think that they were children when it happened. The beginning of the book was quiet and deep as we learn more about the hero and heroine, how they knew each other previously and how they are reconnecting. The middle is more dangerous as the hero and heroine reach out to the Dark River leopards as the Pure Psy intensify their attacks and the last part is powerful and electrifying as they race toward the conclusion hoping to save changelings, humans and the Psy that are scared of the future with or without Silence as they know that change is coming and life will never be the same.
I am interested in what will happen now, we know so much and I can see how the fight will escalate as Pure Psy and those that believe Silence is broken will fight on. Ms. Singh has created a wonderful intricate world and I am so thrilled to have read these books. The characters she develops are interesting and amazing. The whole series is a must read for those that enjoy intense world building, intriguing characters and wonderful love stories.
I give Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh 4.5 stars!
